General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adjusted.
There are various ways of adjusting the front seats to provide safe and comfortable support for the driver and the front passenger.
Adjust your seat properly so that:
• you can easily and quickly reach all the switches and controls in
the instrument panel
• your body is properly supported thus reducing physical stress
and fatigue
• the safety belts and airbag system can offer maximum protec ­
tion=> page 218.
In the following sections, you will see exactly how you can best
adjust your seats.
There are special regulations and instructions for installing a child seat on the front passenger's seat. Always follow the information
regarding child safety provided
in=> page 243, "Child Safety".
& WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and all other passengers
can result in serious personal injury.
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in motion
- never put your feet on top of the instrument panel, out of the
window or on top of the seat cushion. This applies especially to
the passengers. If your seating position is incorrect, you increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an accident. If

the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect, this could
result in personal injury or even death.
• It is important for both the driver and front passenger to keep
a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cml between themselves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument panel. If you're sitting any
closer than this, the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition, the front seats and head restraints must be adjusted to
your body height so that they can give you maximum protection.
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly, causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury. If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving, you are out of position. •
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe and relaxed
driving.
We recommend that you adjust the driver's seat in the
following manner:
- Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that you can
easily push the pedals to the floor while keeping your knees slightly
bent => & in "Why is your seat adjustment
so important?".
- Adjust the seatback so that when you sit with your back
against the seatback, you can still grasp the top of the
steering wheel.

-Position the head restraint according to the occupant's
height~ page 91. For maximum protection, the top of
the head restraint should be at least at eye level, prefer­
ably higher and ideally level with the top of the head
~ page 203, fig. 218.
& WARNING
Never place any objects in the driver's footwell. An object could
get into the pedal area and interfere with pedal function. In case
of sudden braking or an accident, you would not be able to brake
or accelerate. •
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost
position.
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is deploying, do not
sit any closer to the instrument panel than necessary and
always wear the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the passenger's
seat in the following manner:
-Move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position
of the fore and aft adjustment

-Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright position. Do
not ride with the seat reclined.
-The ideal position for the head restraint is with the upper
edge of the restraint level with the top of your head
~ page 91. You should not lower the top of the restraint
below the level of your eyes.

design and the function of the seat. The seats are adjusted by
moving the switches following this logic .

Seat memory
Driver's seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for four drivers can be
stored using the memory buttons in the driver's door.

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat, the settings for the
head restraints, safety belt height, steering column and both exte­
rior mirrors can be stored .
Storing and recalling settings
Using the memory buttons 1, 2, 3 and 4, you can store and recall the
settings for four different
drivers => fig. 94.
The current settings are also automatically stored on the remote
control key being used when the vehicle is locked. When the vehicle
is unlocked, the settings stored on the remote control key being
used are automatically recalled. This function has to be activated in
MMI => page 95.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the [ ON/OFF I switch is depressed, the seat memory is inoperative.
The word
OFF next to the [ON /OFF ! switch illuminates.
All the stored settings are retained. We recommend using the
[ ON /OFF! switch and deactivating the seat memory if the vehicle is only going to be used
temporarily by a driver whose settings are not
going to be stored. •
Storing and recalling a seat position
Before you can store or recall your seat position, the
[ ON /OFF] button must be engaged (down).
Storing settings
-Adjust the driver's seat => page 87.
-Adjust the head restraint => page 91.
-Adjust the steering column => page 128.
-Adjust both outside mirrors=> page 84. In the tilt-down
position, the passenger mirror can be adjusted to the
preferred position and saved in the seat memory.
-Press the [SET] button and hold it down. At the same
time, press one of the memory buttons for at least one
second.
-Release the buttons. The settings are now stored under
the corresponding memory button.
Recalling settings
-Driver's door open - press the desired memory button .
-Driver's door closed - press the corresponding memory
button until the stored position is reached.
When the vehicle is locked, the current settings are stored and
assigned to the remote control key. But the settings stored on
memory buttons 1 to 4 are not deleted. They can be recalled at any
time. When the vehicle is
unlocked , the settings stored on the
remote control key are restored. .,_

If your vehicle is driven by other persons using your remote control
key, you should save your individual seat posi tion on one of the
memory buttons. You can recall your settings again simply and
conveniently by pressing the corresponding memory bu tt o n. When
the vehicle is locked, these settings are automatically re -assigned to
the remote control key and stored .

MM/ .

Rear window shelf
You can place li gh t a rticles of cl othing on the re ar
window shelf behind the sea tbac k.
& WARNING
When driv ing , do not leave any hard objects on the rear w indow
s helf or allow your pet to sit on the shelf . They could be come a
hazard for vehicle oc cup ant s i n the event of sudden bra king or a
c rash .

• A vent slot is located between t he shel f and the rear window . Do
not b lock the vent with any items you may place on the rear window
she lf.
• Do not place bulky items on the rear window shelf as they could
res trict or b lock the driver's vision in the rear view mirro r.•

The long center co nsole between the two rear se ats is not a
s eating po sition. Therefore , a safety belt i s not provided.
• The power adjustment for the individual seats al so works with
the ignition switched off or with the ignition key removed . For this
re as on , children should never be left unattended in the vehicle -
they could be injured!

Easy entry makes it more convenient to enter and leave the rear of
the vehicle. When th e function is turned on, the seat automatically
moves to the rearmost position when the corresponding door is
opened. •

eyelets to secure luggage and other items.

In a collision , the laws of physics mean that even smaller items that
are loose in the vehicle will turn into heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle pick up kinetic energy which
varies with the vehic le and the weight of the item . Vehicle speed is
the most significant factor.
For example , in a frontal collision at a speed of 30 mph (48 km /h) ,
the forces acting on a 10-lb (4 .5 kg) object are about
20 times the
normal weight of the i tem . This means that the weight of the item
would suddenly be the equivalent of about 200 lbs (90 kg). One can
easily imagine the injuries that an i tem of tha t weight flying free ly _,,,

through the passenger compartment can cause in a collision at a
speed considered relatively low.
& WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable retaining straps and properly secure items
to the tie-downs in the luggage compartment to help prevent
items from shifting or flying forward.
• Never attach a child seat tether strap to a tie-down. •
Elastic cargo net
The cargo net prevents light objects from sliding around
in the luggage compartment.

There are two mounting hooks under the base of the rear window
inside the luggage compartment. You can attach the cargo net as
well as

• Always remove objects from the instrument panel. Any items
not stored could slide around inside the vehicle while driving or

when accelerating or when applying the brakes or when driving
around a corner.
• When you are driving make sure that anything you may have
placed in the center console or other storage locations cannot fall
out into the footwells. In case of sudden braking you would not be
able to brake or accelerate.
• Any articles of clothing that you have hung up must not inter­
fere with the driver's view. The coat hooks are designed only for
lightweight clothing . Never hang any clothing with hard, pointed
or heavy objects in the pockets on the coat hooks. During sudden
braking or in an accident -especially if the airbag is deployed -
these objects could injure any passengers inside the vehicle. •
Glove compartment
Your Owner's Literature and the media player are stored
in the lockable glove compartment.

Warm and cold -

Heating sys tems in par ticular require a great dea l of energy. If yo u
not ice, for example, that the seat *, w indshield * or rear w indow
hea ting is no t heat ing, they have bee n t em por arily c ut b ack or
switched off by
energy management . These systems are availabl e
aga in as soon as the ene rgy ba lance has bee n restor ed.
& WARNING
Reduced visibility is dangerous and can cause accidents .
• For safe driving it is very important that all windows be free of
ice , snow and condensation.
• Completely familiarize yourself with the proper use and func­
tion of the heating and ventilation system and especially how to defog and defrost the windows .
• Never use the windshield wiper /washer system in freezing
weather until you have warmed the windshield first , using the
heating and ventilation system. The washer solution may freeze
on the windshield and reduce visibility .

• Air escapes through vents under the rear window . When p lacing

the openings are not covered .
• Climate c ont ro l wor ks mo st effectively if the windows and t he
power roof are c losed . However, if the interior of a parked vehicle is
e xt re mely ho t fro m the sun's rays , briefly open ing the windows ca n
speed up the cooling process .•

This overview is to assist you in familiarizing yourself with
the air conditioning controls .

The left side of the display shows the temperature selected for the
rear passenger on the left, the right side shows the temperature
selected for the rear passenger on the right . If the air conditioning
settings are changed, this appears briefly in the corresponding area
of the display.
Functions are turned on and off by to uching the buttons . The LED in
the switch illuminates when the function is turned on .
By pressing the
sa fet y swi tc h ® in the driver's door ~ page 63 the
climate controls in the rear are deactiva ted. The message
P AS SIV E
appears in the display. In this mode the rear climate control can only
be operated by the driver through the contro ls in the front compar t­
ment.
I ON /OFF] Tu rni ng o n and off
The air conditioning can be turned on and off by pressing the
I ON /OFF] button. With the ignit ion Off, the residual heat function
can be activated by pressing the button . The residual heat from the

coolant can be used to heat the vehicle interior. The residual heat
f unction is turned off au tomatica lly after 30 minu tes .

Temperature can be adjus ted over a range from 64 °F (+ 18 °C) to 80
°F (+26 °C)

You can adjust the air circulation so that air flows from specific
vents.
• In the @setting, al l the air flows from the v ents in the center
conso le and the outlets in the door pillars.
• In the
-Or setting, air flows from the outlets under the front seats.
• In
the~ setting, air flows from ou tlets in the center console and
the door pil lars as we ll as from the outlets under the front seats .

~ H ea ted se ats*
In posit ion O the heating for the seats is turned off. The range of
adjustment is from 1 to 6 .
The seats can be pre -heated for about 10 minutes us ing the heating.
However , the heating is turned off if the seat sensors do not detect
the weight of an occupant during this period .
[ty) Ventil ate d seats*
The seat cushion and the seat back surfaces of the fron t seats can
be ventilated. In position
O the seat ventilation is turned off. The
range of adjustment is from 1 to 6 .

Air tempe rature, volume of air and air dis tribu tion are automatically
regulated to achieve or maintain the desired temperatures as
