Wiper and washer system
Windshield wiper ~
The windshield wiper lever controls both the windshield
wipers and the washer system.

T he windshield wiper lever :::::> fig. 72 has the following posi­
tions:
One -touch wiping
Move the lever to position G), when you want to wipe the
windshield
briefly.
Intermittent wiping ~ l (activating rain sensor)*
Move the lever up to position 0-
- Move the interval set switch@, to change the inter vals .
Low wiper speed
-Move the lever up to position ©-
High wiper speed
- Move the lever up to position @.
Automatic wiper/washer
- Pull the lever to position© (toward the steering wheel)
and hold.
- Re lease the lever . The washer stops and the wipers keep
going for about four seconds .
Turning off the wipers
-Move the lever back to position @.
The windshield wipers and washer only work when the ignition is
turned on. If you switch off the ignition with th e windshield wiper
lever still in the interval wipe position and then come back a while
later and drive off, the rain sensor will reactivate itse lf after the
vehic le speed has exceeded 4 mph (6 km/h).
The rain sensor* is only activated with the wiper lever set to posi­
tion
G) . When it starts to rain, the rain sensor will automatically acti ­
vate the intermittent wiping mode.
To reduce the sensitivity of the sensor , move switch
@ down . To
increase the sensitivity , move the switch up. The higher you adjust
the sensi tivity, the faster the sensor will react when it senses mois­
ture on the windshield. The pauses between wiper turns depend not
only on the sensitivity setting , but on the vehicle speed as well.
During brief stops , e.g. at a r ed light, wiper mot ion wil l automati ­
cally be reduced to the next lower speed. Wipers a lready turning at
low speed . change to intermittent wip ing.
When the igni tion is turned on, the washer jets are heated.
& WARNING
• Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving! Only when they are in
good condition are they able to clear the windows properly to
provide uncompromising visibility. Worn or damaged wiper blades
are a safety hazard~

• The windshield mu st not be tr eated with w ater-r ep ellent mate­
rial s. They c an in creas e glare u nder poor visibilit y cond ition s suc h
a s wetn ess, darkne ss, or when t he sun is low on the hori zon . In
a dditi on, they can cause the wi nd shield wipers to chatter.
0 Note
In freezing or near freezing conditions:
• Always check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the glass
before you turn the wipers on. Loosen a wiper blade which is frozen
in place before operating the wipers to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
• Do not use the wipers to clear a frosted window. Using the
wipers as a convenient ice scraper wil l destroy the wiper blades.
• Before you take your vehicle to an automatic car wash, make sure
you have the windshield wiper system switched off (lever in position
0), otherwise the windshield wiper system could get damaged in the
car wash if it should sudden ly come on .
[ i] Tips
• The rain sensor is pa rt of the interva l wiping system. Turning off
the ignition will also deactivate the rain sensor . To reactivate the
sensor, switch off the interva l wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper b lades cause smearing, which
can affect the operation of the light/rain sensor *. Check the condi ­
tion of your windshield wiper b lades regular ly .
• Applies to vehicles with light/rain sensor : When the wipers are
switched on manually and in rain conditions, the automatic head -

lights * turn on~ page 70, "Sensor activated head and tail light
control" or off during the day when the wipers are n o longer oper ­
ating . The automatic headlights * function is available in this case
only when the light switch is in the "AUTO" position~

• Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in the engine compartment
is topped off before going on a long trip. Look up~
page 236 for
checking and filling the washer container.
• The wipers only operate with the hood completely closed .•

Headlight washer system
The headlight washer system cleans the headlights.

The washer jets extend forward out of the front bumper driven by
water pressure to spray the front head ligh ts with water.
You should inspect the head lights regular ly {for examp le when refu ­
e ling) and clean off any solid dirt or insects from the lenses .
To ensure the sys tem works proper ly in winter, keep the washer jets
free of snow and remove any ice using a de-icing spray.•

Clear vision
Service position The wiper blades can be changed more easily in the
service position .

It is only possible to change wiper blades if you move the
w iper arms to the service position. On vehicles with the
Driver Information System , the wiper blades can only be
moved to the service or parked position via t he menu
display =>
page 27. In order to use the windshield wipers,
the hood must be completely closed.
Moving wiper blades to the service position
-When there is a risk of frost, make sure that the wiper
blades are not frozen to the windshield .
- Switch the ignition on .
- Switch the ignition off again and move the wiper lever
~ fig. 73 from position Oto 1 within 10 seconds . The
wiper arms now move into the field of view in the wind ­
shie ld.
Moving wiper blades to park position
-Make certain that the wiper arms are lying against the
windshield .
- Switch the ignition on and move the wiper lever~ fig . 73
from position Oto
1. The w iper arms w ill move back to the
park position.
I t is much easier to chang e wiper blad es if you mov e th e wiper arms
to the service position. You wil l also avoid paint damage to the hood
when working on the wip ers when they are in the service position .
0 Note
Never drive your vehicle when the windshield wiper arms are in the
service position and pulled away from the windshield . When you
drive faster than 4 mph (6 km/h) , the wiper arms automatica lly
return back to the park position and could cause paint damage to
the engine hood!
[ i ] Tips
• You can also turn on the service position, for example, if you
want to protect the windshield from icing by using a cover.
• The service position moves to
off automatically when you
operate the windshield wiper lever, or speed exceeds 4 mph
(6 km/hl. •

Activating /re ac tiv ating auto dimming

Aut om ati c dimmin g fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active .
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati ­
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when :
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
Sensors for automati c headligh ts *
With the help of the sensors in the mirror, when the light switch is
in the
AUTO posi tion, the low beams are switched on and off auto ­
matically depending on the ambient light conditions=>
page 70.
& WARNING
The glass of the inside rearview mirror is l ayered and contain s an
e lectrolyt e to a chieve its pr opert ie s . Be aware of liquid electr olyte
le aki ng fr om a broken mirror glass . This l iquid can cause irritation
to skin , eyes , and r espiratory sy stem .
• If you get ele ctrolyt e in your e yes or on your sk in , immediately
rin se with p lenty of water . If irritation per sists, s eek medical atten ­
tio n.

Liquid electrolyte leaked from a broken mirror glass wi ll damage any
p lastic surfaces it comes in contact with. Clean up spilled electrolyte
immediately wi th clear wa ter and a sponge .

• If you switch off the automatic di mming function on the in side
mirr or, automatic dimming of the outside mirrors w ill like wise be
di sabled .
• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from
reaching t he inside mirror.
• Do no t attach any stickers to the windshield in front of the two
light sensors, as this would interfere with both the automatic oper­
ation of the headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside
mirror(sl. •
Outside mirrors
The outside mirrors are electrically adjusted.

Reme mber that ve hicles or other ob jec ts w ill appear smalle r and
farther away than when seen in a flat mirror . If you use this mirror to
e stimate d istances of fo llowing vehicles when changing lanes, yo u
cou ld estimat e in correc tly and cause a n acc id en t.
• I f the mirr or housing is moved uninten tionally (for e xample,
wh ile par king your veh icle), then you must first fold the mirro r elec ­
t rically. Do n ot readjust the mi rror housing man ually. You co uld
da mag e the motor w hic h con trol s the mirr or.
[ i ] Tips
If the re s hould be a malfu n ct ion i n th e electrical syste m, you ca n
sti ll adjus t the outside mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror. •

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
The outsi de m irr or s are d immed t ogether w it h the au toma tic
dimming of the inside mirror. When the ignition is sw itched on, the
mi rrors dar ken automat ica lly depe nd ing on t he ligh t stri kin g th em
(e.g. headl ights from the rear) .
When the in te rior lighting is switched on and when reve rse gear is
engaged, the mi rrors a re switched back to their or iginal b rightness
(not dimmed) .
& WARNING
The glass of the inside rear view mirror is layered and contains an
electrolyte to achieve its properties. Be aware of liquid electrolyte
leaking from a broken mirror glass . This liquid can cause irr itation
to skin , eyes, and respiratory system . If you get electrolyte in your
eyes or on your skin , immed iately rinse with plenty of water . If irri ­
tation persists, seek medical attention .

with clear water and a sponge .
[ i ] Tips
• If automatic dimming for the inside mirror is switched off , the
outside mirrors are also not dimmed automatically.
• Automatic d imming for the mirror only operates properly if the
suns hade* fo r the rear w indow is re tr acted, or the l ig ht str iking the
inside mirror is not hindered by other objects .•

Digital compass
Applies to vehicles: with di gital co mpass
Activating or deactivating the compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

To activate or deactivate, hold the @~fig. 78 button
down until the red display appears or disappears.
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The
directions are displayed as initials :
N (North), NE (Northeast), E
(East), SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest), W (West), NW
(Northwest).
[ i) Tips
To avoid inaccura te directions , do not allow any remote controls,
electrical systems, or metal parts close to the mirror. •

Setting the magnetic deflection zone
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be set in order
to display the directions correctly.

Hold the@~ fig. 78 button down until the number of
the set magnetic deflection zone appears on the interior
rear view mirror.
Adjust the magnetic deflection zone by repeatedly
pressing on the@ button. The set mode automatically
deactivates after a few seconds . •

Seats and storage
& WARNING
• Never adjust the driver's or front passenger seat while the
vehicle is moving. If you do this while the vehicle is moving, you
will be out of position . Always adjust the driver's or front
passenger seat when the vehicle is not moving .
• Be careful when adjusting the seat height . Check to see that no
one is in the way, or serious injury could result!
• Because the seats can be electrically adjusted with the ignition
key removed, never leave children unattended in the vehicle. Unsu­
pervised use of the electric seat adjustments may cause serious
injury. •

Power seat adjustment
The switches can be moved in various directions to allow
precise adjustment.

seat cushion to move.
Moving the seat forward and backward G)

Adjusting the seat height 0 and 0 together
Pull the switch evenly at both ends to raise the seat =>& .
-Push the lever evenly at both ends to lower the seat=> &.
Angling the seat cushion up and down 0 or 0
To angle the seat cushion up, pull the switch at the front

Alternatively, push the sw itch at the rear only =>& .
To angle the seat cushion down, push the switch at the

Alternatively , pull the switch at the rear only =>& .

Cigarette lighter/socket
Cigarette lighter
The socket of the cigarette lighter may be used for 12 volt
appliances.

The cigarette lighter or socket only work with the ignition
on.
Using the cigarette lighter
- Slide the cover open to reach the c igarette lighter.
- Push the knob=> fig. 90 in .
- Wait until the cigarette lighter knob pops out.
- Remove the cigarette lighter immediately and use it.
- Reinsert cigarette lighter into the socket after use.
Connecting an appliance
- Slide the cover open to reach the cigarette lighter.
- Remove cigarette lighter.
- Plug in appliance to be used .

Seats and storage
The socket of the cigarette lighter may be used for 12-volt appli­
ances with maximum consumption of up to 100 watts , such as a
flash ligh t, small vacuum cleaner, etc.
Before you purchase any accessories, always read and follow the
information in=>
page 296, "Additional accessories and parts
replacement" .
& WARNING
Improper use of the cigarette lighter can cause serious injury or
start a fire.
• Be careful when using the cigarette lighter. If you do not pay
attention to what you are doing when you are using the cigarette
lighter you can burn yourself.

To avoid damaging the socket, only use plugs that fit properly.
[ i] Tips
• When the engine is off and accessories are still plugged in and
are on, the vehicle battery can still be drained.
• The vehicle battery must not be charged with a standard small
charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter or outlet .•

• Always remove objects from the instrument panel. Any items
not put away could slide around inside the vehicle while driving or

- To adjust the direction o f the airflow from the o utlet,
move the tab in the cen ter of the o utlet in the desired
direction . The direction of the air delivered from the
vents can be adjusted hor izontally and vertically .

If climate control is running in cooling mode, air should flow mainly
from vents @ and
G). To achieve adequate coo ling, you should
never c lose the outlets completely .•
Using the climate controls economically
Economical use of the climate controls helps to save fuel.
When climate co ntrol is w orking in c ooling mode, engine
performa nce is reduced and fuel consum ption is affected .
To keep the t ime the air cond itioning is on as s hort as
poss ible, you s hould do the following :
- If yo u would like to save fue l, sw itch the air con ditioning
off .
- If you open t he windows while driving, switch the air
conditio ning off .

- If the ve hicle is extremely hot due to the heat of the sun,
br ie fl y open doors and windows .

When you save fuel, you reduce emissions from the vehicle .•
Rear window defogger [ffiJ
The rear window defogger clears the rear window of
condensation.

- Press the [ml button to turn t he rear window defogger on
and off.
The rear window defogger works only when the engine is running .
The indicator light in the button illuminates when the rear window
defogger is turned on .
The rear window defogger is switched off automatica lly after 10 to
20 m inutes, depending on the outside temperature .
At very low outside temperatures, the rear window defogger can be switched on continuously by pushing the
Qii) button for more than 2
seconds. This remains stored until the ignition is switched off . A ..,

rear window defogger that was switched on also remains stored for
15 minutes after the ignition is switched off .
If the eng ine is restarted within these 15 m inutes, the rear window
defogger is activated for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on outside
t emperature. With a vehicle that is parked for a short time, the rear
window defogger does not need to be manually activated again.
<£> For the sake of the environment
As soon as the rear window is clear, you should switch the rear
window defogger o ff. The reduced power consumption has a bene­
ficial effect on fue l consumption .•

The seat cushion and the seat back of the front seats can
be heated electrically.

The range of controls goes from 1 to 3 . The heat setting selected is
shown by LEDs above the button .

on the seats or place heavy loads on a small area of the seat. •
