Passenger side airba g/side bag s
deactivated (amber)
The
“warning light s witches on when the front
passenger’ s airbag and s ide bag are dis abled. With
the front passenger airbag s activated, when the ignition
key is turned to MAR, the
“warning light s witches on
cons tantly for about 4 seconds , flashes for another 4 sec-
onds and s hould then s witch off.
“
Failure of the “warning light is indicated
by the
¬warning light coming on. In addi-
tion, the airbag system automatically deac-
tivates the passenger side airbags (front airbag and
side bag for versions/markets, where provided). Be-
fore proceeding, contact a Lancia Dealership to have
the system checked immediately.
S eat belts unfastened (red)
This warning light s witches on cons tantly when
the car is not in motion and the driver s ide seat
belt is not correctly fastened. The warning light
will flas h and a buzzer will s ound if the car is in motion
and the front s eat belts are not correctly fastened.
The SBR (S eat Belt Reminder) system buzzer can only
be permanently deactivated by a Lancia Dealer ship.
The system can be reactivated u sing the S etup Menu.
<
Low battery charge (red)
The warning light comes on when the ignition
key is turned to MAR, but it s hould go out as
soon as the engine ha s started (with the engine
running at idle s peed a brief delay before going out is ac-
ceptable).
If the warning light stays on, cons tantly or flas hing, con-
tact a Lancia Dealer ship immediately .
w
Continuously on: low eng ine oil pressure
(red)
Flas hing: engine oil deteriorated (red)
When the key is turned to MAR the warning light
comes on, but s hould go out as s oon as the engine is s tart-
ed.
1. Low eng ine oil pressure
The warning light switches on cons tantly together (for ver-
s ions /markets , where provided) with the me ssage on the
dis play when the system detects that engine oil pressure
i s low.
v
If the v warning light turns on when the
car is travelling (on certain versions togeth-
er with the message on the display) stop the
engine and contact a Lancia Dealership immedi-
ately.

Engine coolant overheating (red)
Turning the key to the MAR pos ition illumi-
nates the warning light, but it s hould switch off
after a few s econds. The warning light turn s on
when the engine is overheated. If the warning light s witch-
e s on when driving, proceed a s follows :
❍ when driving normally : stop the car, s witch off the en-
gine and check that the water level in the re servoir is
not below the MIN mark. If it is, wait for the engine
to cool down, then slowly and carefull y open the cap,
top up with coolant and check that the level is between
the MIN and MAX mark s on the res ervoir. Also check
vis ually for any fluid leaks . in this case, go to a Lan-
cia Dealers hip if the warning light should switch on
when the engine is started again.
❍ if the vehicle is used under demanding condition s (e.g.
towing trailers uphill or fully loaded): slow down and,
if the light s tays on, stop the car
. Wait for 2 or 3 min-
utes with the engine running and slightly accelerated
to further favour the coolant circulation. Then stop the
engine. Check the correct coolant level a s des cribed
above. IMPORTANT Over demanding routes
, it is advis able to
keep the engine on and s lightly accelerated for a few min-
utes before s witching it off. The di splay will s how the ded-
icated message.

IGNITION SWITCH
The key can be turned to 3 different po sitions fig. 19:
❍ STOP: engine off, key can be removed, steering locked.
S ome electrical device s (e.g. s ound system, central door
locking system, etc.) can operate.
❍ MAR: driving pos ition. All electrical device s can op-
erate.
❍ AVV: engine s tarting.
The ignition s witch is fitted with a safety system that re-
quires the ignition key to be turned back to STOP if the
engine does not start, before the s tarting operation can be
repeated. S
TEERING LOC K
Activation
When the ke y i s at S TOP, remove the key and turn the
s teering wheel until it locks .
Diseng agement
Move the s teering wheel s lightly as y ou turn the ignition
key to MAR.
IMPORTANT In s ome parking conditions (e.g.: wheels
turned) the effort r
equired to move the s teering wheel and
dis engage the steering lock ma y be increas ed.
fig. 19L0E0107m
Never remove the key while the car is mov-
ing. The steering wheel will lock as soon as
it is turned. This holds true for cars being
towed as well. Under no circumstances should af-
termarket operations be carried out involving steer-
ing system or steering column modifications (e.g.
installation of anti-theft device). This could nega-
tively affect performance and safety, invalidate the
warranty, cause serious safety problems and also
result in vehicle non-compliance with type-ap-
proval requirements.

IMPORTANT The steering may become slightly stiff fol-
lowing parking manoeuvres involving a lot of steering.
This is normal and is caused by a system to prevent the
motor from overheating. No servicing is required. The
power steering system will s tart working normall y again
the next time the car is used.TPMS SYSTEM
(Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)
(for vers ions/markets , where provided)
The car may be equipped with a TPMS (Tyre Pre ssure
Monitoring System). This system compris es a radio fre-
quency transmitter fitted to each wheel (on the wheel rim
ins ide the ty re), which i s able to send information on the
t y re inflation pressure of each wheel to the control unit.
IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE TPMS
The fault indication s are not s tored and will therefore
not be dis played after the engine ha s been s witched off
and then on again. If the fault condition s pers is t, the con-
trol unit will s end the relative indication s to the ins tru-
ment panel only after the car ha s been in motion for a
s hort time.
Before starting any servicing operation, stop
the engine and remove the key from the ig-
nition switch to operate the steering lock, par-
ticularly when the wheels do not touch the ground.
If this is not possible (i.e. if the key must be kept
in the MAR position or the engine must be kept run-
ning), remove the main electric power steering sys-
tem fuse.

Identifying a parking space fig. 81
If the system identifies a suitable parking s pace between
two stationary vehicles or between other obs tacles (e.g. ob-
jects with an extens ive side surface such as vehicles , box-
e s, etc.) it will indicate that it ha s found a s pace and that
parking is possible. If the po sition reached is already s uit-
able at the beginning of the manoeuvre, the system will ad-
vis e the driver to engage rever se gear, otherwis e it will re-
ques t moving further forward. On the reques
t to engage revers e gear the driver s hould stop
the vehicle and engage rever se in order to confirm the wi sh
to start the manoeuvre; if the driver continue s driving, af-
ter about 10 metres the system will no longer cons ider the
parking space identified and will start the s ear
ch for new
s uitable space.
Manoeuvre
The driver will have control over the movement s of the ve-
hicle us ing the accelerator, brake and clutch (onl y on ver-
s ions with manual gearbox) whil st the system will auto-
matically manage the s teering to enter the parking s pace
identified in the be st possible wa y.
During the manoeuvre it will be po ssible to take advantage
of the information coming from the parking s ensors (when
rever sing it i s advi sable to reach the area where the rear
s ens ors provide a continuous tone signal), but it i s always
advis able to keep an ey e on the surrounding area.
The vehicle can be s topped during the manoeuvre and,
whils t remaining s tationary, reverse gear can temporarily
be relea sed (for example, to allow a pedes trian to go by in
the area of the manoeuvre).
The speed should be less than about 7 km/h during the
manoeuvr
e, otherwis e the parking manoeuvre will be in-
terrupted.

Version with 8 sensors
On the version with 4 front sens ors and 4 rear s ensors, the
system is activated when revers e gear is engaged or by
pressing the button fig. 84. If there ha s been a reque st to
activate the Magic Parking function, the front and rear
s ens ors are not automaticall y activated during the search
for a parking space, but can be activated b y pre ssing the
s pecial button
tor by engaging revers e gear when the
s peed is below around 15 km/h.
When revers e gear is released, the front and rear s ensors
remain activated until a speed of around 15 km/h i s ex-
ceeded to allow the parking manoeuvre to be completed.
The system can als o be activated by pressing the button
tin the central panel: a warning light in the button
s witches on when the system is activated.
The sens ors are deactivated by pressing the button
tagain or when a speed of 15 km/h is exceeded: thewarning light in the button i
s off when the system is not
active.
When the s ensors are activated, the system starts to pro-
duce acous tic signals from the front or rear buzzers as s oon
a s an obs tacle is detected with the frequency increasing as
the obs tacle gets closer.
When the obs tacle is less than about 30 cm away , the
s ound becomes continuous. Depending on the po sition of
the obs tacle (in front or behind) the sound is emitted by
the corres ponding buzzers (front or rear). The obs tacle
clos est to the car is signalled.
The acoustic signal stops immediately if the distance of
the obs tacle incr
eases. The s ound cy cle remains constant
if the dis tance meas ured by the centre s ensors remains un-
changed, whils t if this s ituation occurs for the side sen-
s ors , the s ignal is interrupted after about 3 s econds (for
example, to prevent s ignals in the cas e of manoeuvres
alongs ide walls ).
fig. 84L0E0249m
The responsibility for parking and other dan-
gerous manoeuvres always and in every case
lies with the driver. While carrying out these ma-
noeuvres, always make sure that no people (espe-
cially children) or animals are in the area con-
cerned. Parking sensors are designed to assist dri-
vers: in all cases, you must always pay the utmost
attention during potentially dangerous manoeuvres,
even when these are carried out a low speed.

Proceed as follows:
❍engage the handbrake;
❍put the gear lever into neutral;
❍turn the ignition key to MAR: the
m
and
Y
warn-
ing lights on the instrument panel will turn on;
❍wait for the warning lights
Y
and
m
to turn off. The
hotter the engine is, the quicker this will happen;
❍fully depress the clutch pedal without operating the ac-
celerator;
❍turn the ignition key to AVV as soon as the
m
warn-
ing light goes out. Waiting too long will waste the heat-
ing work carried out by the glow plugs.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts.IMPORTANT With cold engine, the accelerator pedal shall
be completely released while turning the ignition key to
AV V.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt, turn the
ignition key to STOP again before repeating the procedure.
If instrument panel
Y
warning light remains lit when the
ignition key is turned to MAR, turn the key to STOP and
then back to MAR; if the warning light remains lit, try the
other keys provided with the vehicle. Contact a Lancia Deal-
ership if you still cannot start the engine.
The
m
warning light will flash for 60 sec-
onds after starting or during prolonged
cranking to indicate a fault with the glow
plug pre-heating system. Use the car normally if the
engine starts and go to a Lancia Dealership as soon
as possible.

STARTING AND DRIVING
Never bump start the engine by pushing, tow-
ing or coasting downhill. This could cause fu-
el to flow into the catalytic converter and
damage it beyond repair.
HOW TO WARM UP THE ENGINE
AFTER IT HAS JUST STARTED
Proceed as follows:
❍drive off slowly, letting the engine turn at medium
speed. Do not accelerate abruptly;
❍do not demand maximum performance for the first few
kilometres. Wait until the engine coolant gauge starts
moving.ENGINE SWITCHING OFF
Turn the ignition key to STOP while the engine is idling.
IMPORTANT After a demanding drive, you should al-
low the engine to “catch its breath” before turning it off
by letting it idle to allow the temperature in the engine
compartment to fall.
A quick burst on the accelerator before turn-
ing off the engine serves absolutely no prac-
tical purpose; it wastes fuel and is especially
damaging to turbocharged engines.

HANDBRAKEThe handbrake lever is located between the front seats.
Pull the lever upwards to operate the handbrake, until the
car is braked.
The car should be braked after a few clicks
of the lever; if it is not, contact a Lancia Deal-
ership to have it adjusted.
When the handbrake is on and the ignition key is at MAR,
the instrument panel xwarning light will come on.
Proceed as follows to release the handbrake:
❍slightly lift the lever and press release button A - fig. 1;
❍keep button A pressed and lower the lever. The x
warning light on the instrument panel turns off.
Press the brake pedal when carrying out this operation
to prevent the car from moving accidentally.
PARKING
Proceed as follows:
❍stop the engine and engage the handbrake;
❍engage a gear (on a slope, engage first gear if the car
is facing uphill or reverse if it is facing downhill) and
leave the wheels steered.
Block the wheels with a wedge or a stone if the car is
parked on a steep slope.
Do not leave the ignition key on MAR to avoid draining
the battery. Always remove the key when you leave the
car.
Never leave children unattended in the car. Always remove
the ignition key when leaving the car and take it out with
you.

STARTING AND DRIVING
USING THE GEARBOX To engage the gears, press the clutch pedal fully and shift
the gear lever into the required position (the gear diagram
varies according to the different versions and is shown
on the knob or on the plate below the lever fig. 2).
To engage 6
thgear, operate the lever by pressing it towards
the right in order to avoid engaging 4
thgear by mistake.
The same goes for changing from 6
thto 5
th.
IMPORTANT The car can only be put into reverse gear
when it has stopped moving completely. With the engine
running, wait at least 2 seconds before engaging reverse
gear with the clutch pedal fully depress in order to avoid
damaging or grinding the gears.
fig. 2
L0E0073m
To engage reverse gear R from neutral, raise sliding ring
A under the knob and at the same time move the gear lever
to the left and then forwards.
To engage reverse R from neutral, lift the sliding ring A
under the knob and move the gear lever to the right and
then backwards.
IMPORTANT The clutch pedal should be used only to
change gear. Do not drive with your foot resting on the
clutch pedal, however lightly. For versions/markets where
provided, the electronic clutch pedal control could cut in,
interpreting the incorrect driving style as a fault.
Press the clutch pedal fully to change gears
correctly. Therefore, the floor area under the
pedal unit should be clear: ensure that any
mats are flat and do not interfere with the pedals.Do not drive with your hand resting on the
gear lever, because this pressure, even if light,
can wear out the internal components of the
gearbox over time.
