Display messages
Introduction
General notes Display messages appear in the multifunction display.
Display messages with graphic symbols are simplified in the Owner's Manual and may differ from
the symbols in the multifunction display.
Please respond in accordance with the display messages and follow the additional notes in this
Owner's Manual.
Certain display messages are accompanied by an audible warning tone or a continuous tone.
When the ignition is switched off, all display messages are deleted apart from some high-priority
display messages. Once the causes of the high-priority display messages have been rectified, these
display messages are deleted as well.
When you stop and park the vehicle, please observe the notes on:
R HOLD function (Y page 154)
R Parking (Y page 145)
Hiding display messages X
Press the aor% button on the steering wheel.
The multifunction display hides the display message.
The multifunction display shows high-priority display messages in red. Some high-priority display
messages cannot be hidden.
The multifunction display shows these messages continuously until the causes for the messages
have been remedied.
Message memory The on-board computer saves certain display messages in the
message memory. You can call up
the display messages:
X Press the =or; button on the steering wheel to select the Service
Service menu.
If there are display messages, the multifunction display shows 2 messages
2 messages, for example.
X Press the 9or: button to select the entry, e.g. 2 messages
2 messages.
X Press ato confirm.
X Press the 9or: button to scroll through the display messages. Display

R Self-diagnosis is not yet complete
R The on-board voltage may be insufficient.
G WARNING
The braking performance of the electric motor using recuperative
braking may be either reduced or not effective. If you do not make an
additional effort to apply the brake yourself, the braking effect may not be sufficient. If necessary, counteract the reduced regenerative brak-
ing effect by applying the brake yourself.
The brake system continues to function normally, but without the
functions listed above. The wheels could therefore lock if you brake
hard, for example.
The steerability and braking characteristics may be severely affected. The braking distance may increase in an emergency braking situation.
If ESP ®
is not operational, ESP ®
is unable to stabilise the vehicle.
There is an increased danger of skidding and risk of an accident.
X Carefully drive on a suitable stretch of road, making slight steering
movements, at a speed above 20 km/h.
If the display message disappears, the functions mentioned above
are available again.
If the multifunction display still shows the display message:
X Drive on carefully.

is lit.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning.
To release:
X Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Release the electric parking brake manually.
To apply: X Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Apply the electric parking brake manually.
If the red !indicator lamp continues to flash:
X Do not drive on.
X Safeguard the vehicle against rolling away (Y page 274).
X Shift the transmission to position P.
X Turn the front wheels towards the kerb.
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The yellow
!warning lamp lights up. The red !indicator lamp
flashes for about ten seconds after the electric parking brake has been applied or released. It then goes out or remains lit.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning.
X Switch off the ignition and turn it back on.
X Apply the electric parking brake.
If it is not possible to apply the electric parking brake:
X Shift the transmission to position P.
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
If it is not possible to release the electric parking brake:
X Release the electric parking brake automatically (Y page 146).
If the electric parking brake still cannot be released:
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. The yellow
!warning lamp lights up. If you manually apply or
release the electric parking brake, the red !indicator lamp
flashes.
The electric parking brake is malfunctioning. It is not possible to apply
the electric parking brake manually.
X Shift the transmission to position P.

steering intervention was active.
X While steering intervention is active, make sure not to touch the
multifunction steering wheel. The vehicle has started to skid and ESP

has intervened.
X Use Active Parking Assist again later (Y page 158).Park Assist inoper‐ Park Assist inoper‐
ative ative You have just carried out a large number of turning or parking manoeu-
vres.
Active Parking Assist will become available again after approximately ten minutes (Y page 158).
X Pull over and stop the vehicle safely as soon as possible, paying
attention to road and traffic conditions.
X Switch off the drive system and start it again.
If the multifunction display still shows the display message:
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. PARKTRONIC is faulty.
X Consult a qualified specialist workshop. Park Assist Park Assist

Underinflated tyres pose the following risks:
R the tyres may burst, especially as the load and vehicle speed
increase
R the tyres may wear excessively and/or unevenly, which may greatly
impair tyre traction
R the driving characteristics, as well as steering and braking, may be
greatly impaired
There is a risk of an accident.
X Stop the vehicle without making any sudden steering or braking
manoeuvres. Pay attention to the traffic conditions as you do so.
X Safeguard the vehicle against rolling away (Y page 145).
X Check the tyres and, if necessary, follow the instructions for a flat
tyre (Y page 249).
X Check the tyre pressure (Y page 270).
X If necessary, correct the tyre pressure. Warning tyre defect Warning tyre defect The tyre pressure in one or more tyres has dropped suddenly. The
wheel position appears in the multifunction display.
G WARNING
If you drive with a flat tyre, there is a risk of the following hazards: R a flat tyre affects the ability to steer or brake the vehicle
R you could lose control of the vehicle
R continued driving with a flat tyre will cause excessive heat build-up
and possibly a fire
There is a risk of an accident.
X Stop the vehicle without making any sudden steering or braking
