1, 000 km (620 miles), it is advisable to
drive your new vehicle using the follow-
ing precautions as a guideline to aid long
life as well as future economy and perfor-
mance.
(1) Do not race the engine at high speeds.
(2) Avoid rapid starting, accelerating, brak-
ing and prolonged high-speed run-
ning.
(3) Keep to the running-in speed limit
shown below.
Please note that the legal speed lim-
its displayed must be adhered to.

(7)Load
Do not drive with unnecessary articles
in the luggage compartment. Espe-
cially during city driving where fre-
quent starting and stopping is
necessary, the increased weight of the
vehicle will greatly affect fuel consump-
tion. Also avoid driving with unneces-
sary luggage, etc., on the roof; the
increased air resistance will increase
fuel consumption.
(8)Cold engine starting
Starting of a cold engine consumes
more fuel.
Unnecessary fuel consumption is also
caused by keeping a hot engine run-
ning. After the engine is started, com-
mence driving as soon as possible.
(9)Air conditioning*
The use of the air conditioning will
increase the fuel consumption.(10)Driving techniques for
engine
To take maximum advantage of the
fuel efficiency and other benefits of
the
engine, please
observe the following guidelines:
•TheECO indication lamp
in the meter cluster illuminates when
the vehicle is driven in a
fuel-efficient, environment-friendly
manner. Try to drive such that the
lamp is illuminated as much as pos-
sible. In particular, you should avoid
sudden starts and rapid accelera-
tion.
ECO indication lamp
→P.4-13
•Use of the air conditioner causes
fuel consumption and
carbon-dioxide emissions to
increase significantly. Avoid using
the air conditioner to cool the cabin
more than necessary.

Trailer towing
EC21AOIa
In order to tow a trailer with your vehicle,
have a trailer towing device that meets all
relevant regulations in your area, mounted
at an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
The regulations concerning the towing of a
trailer may differ from country to country.
You are advised to obey the regulations in
each area.
CAUTION
Danger of Accident!
A towing bar should be fitted by an
authorized MITSUBISHI dealer.
[For super select 4WD models]
When you are going to tow a trailer,
move the transfer shift lever to“4H”
position.
Selecting“2H”drive may increase
the differential oil temperature, result-
ing in possible damage to the driv-
ing system.
Further, the drive train will be sub-
jected to excessive loading possi-
bly leading to oil leakage, component
seizure, or other serious faults.
NOTE
Fitting of a towing bar requires special-
ized skills and equipment.
Contact an authorized MITSUBISHI dealer
for details. If you are going to tow a trailer,
pay careful attention to the following points.

Maximum towable weight with brake
and maximum trailer-nose weightNever exceed the maximum towable
weight with brake and the maximum
trailer-nose weight as listed in the specifi-
cations. (Refer to page 10-7,10-8)
If you tow a trailer at an altitude of more
than 1000m above sea-level, reduce your
weight by 10% of the gross combination
weight for every increase of 1000m above
sea-level, as the engine output is low-
ered owing to decrease in atmospheric
pressure.

NOTE
The values under Item 10 are applicable to
unladen vehicles. These values can also be
varied depending on the tyre size, optional
equipment and suspension conditions.
Operating hints(1) Do not let the clutch slip (vehicles with
a manual transmission only) and do not
increase the engine speed more than
necessary when starting.
(2) Be sure that the driving speed does not
exceed the 100 km/h (62 mph) for
trailer operation.
It is also recommended that you obey
the local regulations in case driving
speed with a trailer is limited to less
than 100 km/h (62 mph).
(3) To prevent shocks from the overrun
brake, depress the brake pedal lightly
at first and then more strongly.
(4) To make full use of engine braking,
change to a lower gear before
descending a slope.
(5) The body, brakes, clutch, and chas-
sis will be under additional strain when
towing a trailer.
(6) The heavier weight and higher rolling
and air resistance will increase fuel
consumption.Additional precautions for vehicles
equipped with an automatic transmis-
sion
The 2nd gear (in sports mode) is recom-
mended on slopes or at low speed. Use the
1st gear (in sports mode) in mountainous
areas in order to make better use of engine
braking and to assist the brake system.
However, be sure that the speed does not
exceed the maximum speed limit for the
selected gear.

To release
1- Pull the lever up slightly.
2- Push the button at the end of the hand
grip.
3- Push the lever downward.
When parking on a hill, apply the parking
brake and turn the front wheels towards the
kerb on a downhill grade, away from the
kerb on an uphill grade.
CAUTION
Before driving, be sure that the park-
ing brake is fully released and the
brake warning lamp is off.
If a vehicle is driven without releas-
ing the parking brake, the brake will
be overheated, resulting in ineffec-
tive braking and possible brake fail-
ure.
Parking
EI22A-He
Parking on a slopeFully engage the parking brake, and then
move the gearshift lever to 1st (on an
uphill) or reverse (on a downhill) position on
manual transmission vehicle.
On automatic transmission vehicle, move
the selector lever to“P”(PARK) position.
When parking on a hill, apply chocks to
wheels for greater safety.Parking with the engine runningDo not keep the engine running in a closed
or poorly ventilated place. Carbon monox-
ide gas is odourless and extremely poison-
ous and dangerous.Where you parkDo not park in a place where there are
inflammable objects such as dry grass,
leaves, etc. because the exhaust system
produces very high temperatures. This may
cause a fire. When leaving the vehicleAlways remove the key from the ignition
switch and lock all doors when leaving the
vehicle unattended.
Always try to park your vehicle in a well lit
area.

Braking
EI23AAGa
All the parts of the brake system are criti-
cal to safety. Have the vehicle serviced by an
authorized MITSUBISHI dealer at regular
intervals according to the service booklet.Brake system(1) The service brake is divided into two
brake circuits so that when one brake
circuit fails, the other is available to stop
the vehicle. If this occurs, however, the
brake pedal must be depressed fur-
ther than usual; stop driving as soon as
possible and have the brake system
repaired at the nearest authorized
MITSUBISHI dealer.
(2) The brake boosting force is lost after
the brake pedal is depressed once or
twice while the engine is off. If this
occurs, the brake will require greater
force than usual. This is especially
important when the vehicle is being
towed.
Vehicles equipped with anti-lock brake
system
The brake system uses brake fluid pres-
surized by the pump to power-assist the
brake. If the brake system fails during driv-
ing, the brake warning lamp comes on and
buzzer sounds continuously. In this case,
the brake may not work properly. If this buzzer should continue to sound,
park your vehicle in a safe place and con-
tact your nearest authorized MITSUB-
ISHI dealer.
Please refer to“Brake warning lamp”on
page 4-7.
CAUTION
Bring the vehicle to halt in a safe
location by applying the brakes gen-
tly. Applying the brakes rapidly or
driving at high speed may make the
vehicle unstable.
NOTE
(1) Depressing the brake pedal repeat-
edly may turn on the brake warning
lamp, ABS warning lamp and brake
warning buzzer. It is normal if the lamp
goes out and the buzzer stops sound-
ing after a few seconds.
(2) In certain cases immediately after the
engine has been started or when the
brake pedal is depressed repeatedly, a
noise generated by operation of brake
devices may be heard coming from the
engine compartment. This type of noise
is normal and is no need for concern.
In fact, it indicates that the correspond-
ing devices are operating normal.
Warning lampThe brake warning lamp lets you know if
your brake system is working properly.
Read“Brake warning lamp”on page 4-7.When brakes are wetCheck the brake system while driving at a
low speed immediately after starting, espe-
cially when the brakes are wet, to con-
firm they work normally.
A film of water can form on the brake discs
and prevent normal functioning after driv-
ing in heavy rain or through large puddles,
or after the vehicle is washed. If this occurs,
dry the brakes out by driving slowly while
lightly depressing the brake pedal. When driving downhillIt is important to take advantage of the
engine braking by shifting to a lower gear
while driving on steep downhill roads in
order to prevent the brakes from overheat-
ing.

WARNING
(1) After adjusting to the desired
height, check to be sure that the
lever is locked.
(2) Do not attempt to adjust the
steering wheel while you are
driving the vehicle.
(3) When releasing the tilt lock lever,
move it to the release position
(2) and hold the steering wheel
by hand to prevent it falling to
the lowest position.
Power steering system
EC13A-AH
When the engine is stopped, the power
steering system will not function and it will
require greater manual effort to operate the
steering wheel. Keep this in mind in par-
ticular when towing the vehicle. Never turn
off the engine while driving.
Periodically check the power steering fluid
level.
CAUTION
Do not hold the steering wheel in the
fully turned position (either left or
right), for longer than 10 seconds.
This can cause damage to the power
steering pump due to reduced lubri-
cation.
