InstallingaccessoriesTheincorrectconnectionandinstallationof
accessoriescannegativelyaffectthecar’s
electricalsystem.Certainaccessoriesonly
functionwhentheappropriatesoftwarehas
beenprogrammedintothecar’selectrical
system.AlwayscontactanauthorisedVolvo
workshopbeforeinstallingaccessories
whichareconnectedtooraffectthe
electricalsystem.RecordingvehicledataOneormoreofthecomputersinyourVolvo
arecapableofrecordingdetailedinformation.
Thisinformationisintendedforusein
researchtoenhancesafetyandfor
diagnosingfaultsinsomeofthein-car
systems.Thedatamayincludedetails
regardingseatbeltusebythedriverand
passengers,thefunctionsofvariousvehicle
systemsandmodules,andstatusinformation
abouttheengine,throttle,steering,brakes
andothersystems.Thisdatacanalsoinclude
detailsofthewaythecarisdriven.Thistype
ofinformationcaninclude,withoutbeing
limitedto,specificdetailssuchasvehicle
speed,theuseofthebrakeandaccelerator
pedalsandsteeringwheelposition.This
lattertypeofdatacanbestoredforalimited
periodwhilethecarisbeingdrivenand
subsequentlyduringacollisionoranear-collision.VolvoCarCorporationwillnot
disclosethestoredinformationwithout
consent.However,VolvoCarCorporation
maybeforcedtodisclosetheinformationdue
tonationallegislation.VolvoCarCorporation

Checkthatthebatterycablesarecorrectly
connectedandtightened.
Neverdisconnectthebatterywhenthe
engineisrunning(e.g.ifreplacingthe
battery).
Neveruseaquickchargertochargethe
battery.Thebatterycablesmustbediscon-
nectedwhenchargingthebattery.
Thebatterycontainsacidthatisboth
corrosiveandtoxic.Handlethebatteryinan
environmentally-suitableway.LetyourVolvo
dealerassistyou.
CheckregularlyCheckthefollowingatregularintervals,for
example,whenrefuelling:
Coolant-Thelevelmustbebetweenthe
MINandMAXmarksontheexpansion
tank.
Engineoil-Thelevelmustbebetween
theMINandMAXmarks.
Powersteeringfluid-Thelevelmustbe
betweentheMINandMAXmarks.
Washerfluid-Thereservoirshouldbe
wellfilled.Usewasherantifreezeat
temperaturesaroundfreezing.
Brakeandclutchfluid-Thelevelmustbe
betweentheMINandMAXmarks.
LiftingthecarIfthecarisliftedwithaworkshopjack;
positionthejackwiththefrontedgeonthe
subframe.
Donotdamagethesplashguardunderthe
engine.Ensurethatthejackispositionedso
thatthecarcannotslideoff.Alwaysuseaxle
standsorthelike.
Ifyouliftthecarusingatwopillarworkshop
lift,ensurethatthefrontandrearliftarmsare
fixedundertheliftingpointsonthedoorsill.

system.Thevoltageintheignitionsystem

Onlyusedieselfuelfromawell-knownoil
companythatfulfilstherequirementsfor
recommendedfuelgradeasdescribedon
page244.Neverusedieselofdubious
quality.Specialdieselfueldesignedfor
outsidetemperaturesaroundfreezingpointis
availablefromthemajoroilcompanies.This
fuelislessviscousatlowtemperaturesand
reducestheriskofwaxbuildingupinthefuel
system.
Theriskofcondensationbuildingupinthe
tankisreducedifthetankiskeptwellfilled.
Makesurethattheareaaroundthefillerpipe
iscleanwhenrefuelling.
Avoidspillingontothepaintwork.Washoff
anyspillswithdetergentandwater.EmptytankNospecialproceduresarerequiredifthe
tankisrundry.Thefuelsystemisbled
automaticallyiftheignitionswitchiskeptin
positionIIforapprox.60secondsbeforethe
startattempt.
Drainingcondensationfromthe
fuelfilterThefuelfilterseparatescondensationfrom
thefuel.Condensationcandisruptengine
operation.
Thefuelfiltermustbedrainedattheintervals
specifiedintheServiceandWarranty
Bookletorifyoususpectthatthecarhas
beenfilledwithcontaminatedfuel.IMPORTANT!Dieseltypefuelswhichmustnotbeused:
specialadditives,MarineDieselFuel,fuel
oil,RME(RapeMethylEster),vegetable
oil.
Thesefuelsdonotfulfiltherequirements
inaccordancewithVolvorecommenda-
tionsandgenerateincreasedwearand
enginedamagethatisnotcoveredbythe
Volvowarranty.

Volvorecommendscheckingtheoillevel
every2500km.Themostaccuratemeasure-
mentsaremadeonacoldenginebefore
starting.Themeasurementwillbeinaccurate
iftakenimmediatelyaftertheengineis
switchedoff.Thedipstickwillindicatethat
thelevelistoolowbecausetheoilhasnot
hadtimetoflowdownintotheoilsump.
IMPORTANT!Alwaysuseoiloftheprescribedgrade,
seetheenginecompartmentdecal.
Checktheoillevelfrequentlyandchange
theoilregularly.
Theenginewillbedamagediflower
gradeoilisusedorifthecarisdriven
withtheoilleveltoolow.
IMPORTANT!Whenfillingoiltotopupalowoillevel,
theoilbeingfilledmustbeofthesame
gradeandviscosityastheoilinthe
engine.

thatthemixtureofcoolantconcentrateand
wateriscorrectfortheprevailingweather
conditions.Nevertopupwithwateronly.The
riskoffreezingincreaseswithbothtoolittle
andtoomuchcoolantconcentrate.

well-filledcoolingsystem.Hightemperatures

IMPORTANT!Alwaysusecoolantwithanti-corrosion
agentasrecommendedbyVolvo.New
carsarefilledwithcoolantthatcan
withstandtemperaturesdownto
approximately–35°C.

Thecoolantmaybeveryhot.Ifthecoolant
requirestoppingupwhentheengineisat
operatingtemperature,unscrewthe
expansiontankcapslowlytogently

mounting.Fitthenewbladeinreverse
orderandcheckthatitissecurelyin
place.
NOTE!Keepinmindthatthewiperbladeon
thedriver’ssideisstraightandhasaspoiler
whiletheoneonthepassengersideis
curved.Thespoileronthedriver’sside
shouldsitonthelowersideoftheblade.The
curveofthebladeshouldfollowthecurveof
thebottomedgeofthewindscreen.
Replacingrearwindowwiper
blades–Foldoutthewiperarm.
–Removethewiperbladebypullingit
outwardstowardsthetailgate.

BatteryBatterycareThefunctionandlifeofthebatteryisaffected
bynumberofstarts,numberoftimes
discharged,drivingstyle,drivingconditions,
climateconditions,etc.
Repeateduseoftheparkingheaterand
similarlargepowerconsumerscombined
withshortdrivingdistancescouldleadtoa
dischargedbatteryandtherebyproblems
starting.
Forthebatterytofunctionsatisfactorily,
considerthefollowing:
Regularlycheckthatthebatteryfluidlevel
iscorrect(A).Checkallcells.Useascrewdriverto
removethecaps.Eachcellhasitsown
maximumlevelmark.
Ifnecessary,topupwithdistilledwaterto
thebattery’smaximummark.
Neverfillabovethemaximummark(A).
–Tightenthecapsproperly.
NOTE!Thelifeofthebatteryisshortenedif
itbecomesdischargedrepeatedly.
