ThetemplatesareforbothLHDandRHD
variantsandarepositionedasillustrated.
TheupperillustrationisforLHDcars.The
lowerillustrationisforRHDcars.
HalogenheadlampsCopytemplates1and2.Checkthemeasure-
mentstoensuretheyarecorrect.Transferthe
templatetoaself-adhesive,waterproof
materialandcutitout.
Positioneachtemplatesothatthearrows
pointtowardsthecentreandthedotonthe

BLISisbasedondigitalcameratechnology.
Thecameras(1)arefittedunderthedoor
mirrors.
Whenacamerahasdetectedavehicleinside
theblindspotzonethenanindicatorlampis
litinthedoorpanel(2).Thelightcomeson
withaconstantglowtodrawthedriver’s
attentiontoavehicleintheblindspot.NOTE!Thelampcomesononthesideofthe
carwherethesystemhasdetectedthe
vehicle.Ifthecarisovertakenonbothsides
atthesametimethenbothlampscomeon.
BLISalsohasanintegratedfunctionwhich
warnsthedriverifafaultshouldariseinthe
system.If,forexample,thesystem’scameras
areobscuredthentheBLISindicatorlamp
flashesandamessageisshowninthe
dashboarddisplay(seethetableon
page145).Insuchcases,checkandclean
thelenses.Ifnecessary,thesystemcanbe
switchedofftemporarilybypressingtheBLIS
button(seepage145).
WhenBLISoperates
Thesystemoperateswhenthecarisdrivenat
aspeedabove10km/h.
Whenyouovertakeanothervehicle:Thesystemreactsifyouovertakeanother
vehicleataspeedofupto10km/h
fasterthantheothervehicle.Whenyouareovertakenbyanother
vehicle:Thesystemreactsifyouareovertakenby
avehicletravellingupto70km/hfaster
thanyouaretravelling.
WARNING!
Thesystemisasupplementto,andnota
replacementfor,theexistingrearview
mirrors.Itcanneverreplacethe
awarenessandresponsibilityofthedriver.

designedtodetectmotorvehiclessuchas
cars,trucks,busesandmotorcycles.DarknessIndarknessthesystemreactstothe
headlampsofsurroundingvehicles.Ifits
headlampsarenotswitchedonthenthe
systemdoesnotdetectthevehicle.This
meansforexamplethatthesystemdoesnot
reacttoatrailerwithoutheadlampswhichis
towedbehindacarortruck.Cleaning
InordertoworkmosteffectivelytheBLIS
cameralensesmustbeclean.Thelensescan
becleanedwithasoftclothordampsponge.
Cleanthelensescarefullysothattheyarenot
scratched.
WARNING!
BLISdoesnotworkinsharpbends.
BLISdoesnotworkwhenthecaris
reversing.
Awidetrailercoupledtothecarcan
concealothervehiclesinadjacentlanes.
Itcanpreventthevehicleinthescreened
areafrombeingdetectedbyBLIS.
WARNING!
Thesystemdoesnotreacttobicycles
ormopeds.
TheBLIScamerascanbedisruptedby
intensivelightorwhendrivinginthedark
whentherearenolightsources(e.g.
streetlightingorothervehicles).The
systemmaytheninterpretthelackoflight
asifthecamerashavebeenblocked.
Inbothcasesamessageisshowninthe
dashboarddisplay.
Whendrivinginsuchconditionsthe
systemcanbetemporarilyswitchedoff
(seetheinformationonthenextpage).
Whenthetextmessagehasfadedthe
systemreturnstofullfunctionality.
TheBLIScamerashavethesame
limitationsasthehumaneye,i.e.they
"see"worseinheavysnowfallorthickfog
forexample.

BLIScanbereactivatedbypressingthe
button.AnLEDinthebuttonthencomes
on,anewtextmessageisshowninthe
displayandtheindicatorlampsinthedoorpanelsflashthreetimes.Pressthe
READbutton,seepage47,toclearthe
textmessage.
Themessagesaboveareonlyshownifthe
ignitionkeyisinpositionII(oriftheengineis
running)andBLISisactive(i.e.ifthedriver
hasnotswitchedoffthesystem).

characteristics.Thetypeoftyre,dimensions,
tyrepressureandspeedratingareimportant
forhowthecarperforms.
Whenchangingtyres,ensurethattyresofthe
sametypeanddimensions,andpreferably
alsothesamemake,arefittedtoallfour
wheels.Followtherecommendedtyre
pressuresspecifiedonthetyrepressure
label,seepage151.
Designationofdimensions
Thedimensionsarestatedonallcartyres.
Example:
225/70R16102H.SpeedratingsThecarisapprovedasawhole,whichmeans
thatdimensionsandspeedratingsmustnot
differfromthosespecifiedonthevehicle’s
registrationdocument.Theonlyexceptiontotheseconditionsiswintertyres(boththose
withstudsandthosewithout).Ifsuchatyreis
chosen,thecarmustnotbedrivenfasterthan
thespeedratingofthetyre(forexample,
classQcanbedrivenatamaximumof
160km/h).
Rememberthattrafficregulationsdetermine
howfastacarcanbedriven,notthespeed
classofthetyres.
Note!Maximumpermittedspeedsindicated.
Newtyres
Tyresareperishable.Aftera
fewyearstheybeginto
hardenatthesametimeas
thefrictioncapacity/charac-
teristicsgraduallydeteri-
orate.Thereforeaimtoget
asfreshtyresaspossiblewhenyoureplace
them.Thisisespeciallyimportantwithregard
towintertyres.Theweekandyearof
manufacture,thetyre’sDOTmarking
(DepartmentofTransportation),arestated
withfourdigits,forexample1502.Thetyreintheillustrationwasmanufacturedinweek15
of2002.
Tyreage
Alltyresolderthansixyearsshouldbe
checkedbyanexperteveniftheyseem
undamaged.Thereasonforthisisthattyres
ageanddecompose,eveniftheyarehardly
everorneverused.Thefunctioncan
thereforebeaffectedduetothetyre’s
constituentmaterialsbeingbrokendown,
anditshouldthennotbeused.
Thisalsoappliestosparetyres,wintertyres
andtyressavedforfutureuse.
Examplesofexternalsignswhichindicate
thatthetyreisunsuitableforusearecracks
ordiscolouration.

sideofthetyrearethelettersTWI(tread
wearindicator).Whenonly1.6mmoftread
remains,thisbandisclearlyvisible.Change
thetyresassoonaspossible.Rememberthat
tyreswithlittletreaddepthprovideverypoor
gripinrainandsnow.WintertyresVolvorecommendswintertyreswith
particulardimensions.Thesearestatedon
thetyrepressurelabel,seepage151forits
location.Thetyredimensionsaredependentontheenginevariant.Whendrivingonwinter
tyres,thesemustbefittedtoallfourwheels.
NOTE!AskaVolvodealerwhichrimandtyre
typesaremostsuitable.
StuddedtyresStuddedwintertyresshouldberuningently
for500-1000kmsothestudssettleproperly
intothetyre.Thisgivesthetyre,and
especiallythestuds,alongerlifespan.
NOTE!Thelegalprovisionsfortheuseof
studdedtyresvaryfromcountrytocountry.
Treaddepth
Roadconditionswithice,slushandlow
temperaturesplaceconsiderablyhigher
demandsontyresthansummerconditions.It
isthereforenotrecommendedtodriveon
wintertyresthathaveatreaddepthofless
thanfourmillimetres.
Snowchains
Snowchainsmayonlybeusedonthefront
wheels.Thisalsoappliestoall-wheel-drive
cars.
Neverdrivefasterthan50km/hwithsnow
chains.Avoiddrivingonbaregroundasthis
wearsoutboththesnowchainsandtyres.
Neverusequick-fitsnowchainsasthespace
betweenthebrakedisksandthewheelsis
toosmall.
IMPORTANT!UseVolvogenuinesnowchainsorequiv-
alentchainsdesignedforthecarmodel,
andtyreandrimdimensions.Consultan
