Reassembly
1. Install compression ring and spring retainer. Ensure main shaft assembly does not rotate. Install main
shaft stopper. Install NEW lower column tube attachment, bolt and washer to column tube support.
2. On models equipped with A/T, install steering column housing support. Install 4 NEW Torx bolts. On all
models, install column upper tube with main shaft assembly to column tube assembly. Install 4 NEW
Torx bolts.
3. Install turn signal bracket with 2 NEW Torx screws. On models equipped with A/T, install park lock
cable assembly, shift lever housing with 3 NEW Torx screws, upper No. 2 steering cover and shift lever
with NEW Torx screw.
Disassembly (4Runner)
1. Place steering column assembly in vise. Remove transponder key coil with key cylinder illumination
assembly. Center punch and drill into both steering column bracket bolts. Use screw extractor to remove
bolts.
2. Remove snap ring. Using soft-face hammer, tap shaft assembly from column tube. Remove following
snap ring. See Fig. 10
.
Inspection
Ensure lock mechanism, key cylinder, ignition switch, key unlock warning switch and key interlock solenoid
(A/T) operate properly. Check column bearing for rotating smoothness. Replace column housing if bearing or
housing shows any damage. Check steering shaft for bends, damaged splines or other damage. Repair or replace
components as necessary.
Reassembly
1. Install NEW snap ring to shaft assembly. Install shaft assembly into column tube. Install NEW second
snap ring to retain shaft assembly in column.
2. Coat inside of new bearing with molybdenum disulfide lithium-based grease.
3. Install column upper bracket and clamp, using 2 NEW taper-head screws. Tighten until screw heads
break off.
4. Install transponder key coil and key cylinder illumination assembly. Install and tighten all bolts to
specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Steering Column Switches - Trucks
DESCRIPTION
Headlight and turn signal switch (left side of column) and wiper/washer switch (right side of column) are part of
the combination switch. Lever for tilt steering (if equipped) is on left side of column.
COMPONENT TESTS
HEADLIGHT, DIMMER & PASSING SWITCHES
With headlight switch in specified position, check continuity between specified terminals of headlight switch
connectors. See HEADLIGHT SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
table and/or DIMMER & PASSING
SWITCHES CONTINUITY TEST table. For switch terminal locations, see Fig. 1 . If continuity is not as
specified, replace headlight switch.
HEADLIGHT SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
DIMMER & PASSING SWITCHES CONTINUITY TEST (ALL MODELS) WARNING:Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See
AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to
any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag
system. Air bag may deploy.
NOTE: For information on cruise control switch (right side of column), see appropriate
CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS article.

HEADLIGHT CONTROL RELAY
Remove headlight control relay. See HEADLIGHT CONTROL RELAY LOCATION
table. Continuity
should exist between relay terminals No. 3 and 4 at all times. See Fig. 2
. Continuity should not exist between
relay terminals No. 1 and 2. Apply battery voltage across relay terminals No. 3 and 4. Continuity should now
exist between relay terminals No. 1 and 2. If continuity is not as specified, replace relay.
