Starting and stopping the engine
with convenience key

Starting the engine with the
[START ENGINE S TOP] button
This button switches on the ignition and starts the
engine.

By pressing the [START ENGINE STOP] button without depressing
the clutch or the brake peal, the ignition is switched on and sw itched
off by pressing it again .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10 seconds
and then try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later.
After a co ld engine is started, there may be a brief period of increased
noise because oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve
adjusters. This is normal and not a cause for concern.
Driver message in the instrument cluster display
No key identified
This message appears when the !START ENGINE STOP] button is
pressed if there is no master key ins ide the veh icle or if the system
does not recognize it. For example, the master key cannot be recog­
nized if it is covered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief case) which
screens the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can
also interfere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the !STAR T ENGINE STOP)
button to start the engine and do not depress the brake pedal. The
eng ine can only be started if the brake peda l is depressed.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appears when attempting to start the engine if the
selector lever for the automatic transmission is not in the P or N posi­
tion. The engine can on ly be started with the selector in these posi­
tions.
Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the.:! symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key .
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch on the
ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
eng ine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the outside
w ith the key.
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P .
This message appears for safety reasons along with a wa rning signal.
It appears if the selector lever for the automatic transmission is not
in the P position when switching off the ignition with the
!START ENGINE STOP] button. Move the selector lever to the P _..

0 Note
If the eng ine has been under heavy load for an extended period, heat
builds up in the engine compartment after the engine is switched off
- there is a risk of damaging the engine. Allow the engine to run at idle
for about 2 minutes before switching it off. •
Electromechanical parking brake
Operation
The electromechanical parking brake replaces the hand
brake.

- Step on the brake pedal or the accelerator pedal and press
the switch at the same time to release the parking brake.
The indicator light in the switch goes out.
Your vehicle is equipped with an electromechanical parking brake.
The parking brake is designed to prevent the vehicle from rolling
unintentiona lly and replaces the hand brake. In addition to the normal functions of a traditional hand brake, the
electromecha
nical parking brake provides various convenience and
safety functions.
When starting from rest
• The integral starting assist helps you when driving by automati­
cally releas ing the parking brake=>
page 111, "Starting from rest".
• When starting on inclines, the starting assist prevents the vehicle
from unintentionally ro ll ing back. The braking fo rce of the parking
brake is not released until sufficient driving force has been built up at
the whee ls.
Emergency brake function
An emergency brake ensures that the vehicle can be slowed down
even if the
normal brakes fail=> page 112, "Emergency braking" .
Indicator lights
• If the parking brake is closed with the ignition switched on the
ind icator lights come on:::, (USA models)/ ®) (Canada models) in the
instrument cluster and the switch.
• If the park ing brake is closed with the ign it ion
switched off the
indicator lights come on

instrument cluster and the switch fo r about 20 seconds.
& WARNING
If a gear or a drive range (automati c transmission ) is engaged
with the vehicle stationary and the engine running , you must in no
instance accelerate or release the clutch carelessly. Otherwise the
vehicle will start to move immediately -risk of an accident.

If the symbol ID in the display or the indicator light BRAKE (USA
mode ls)/ ((j)) (Canada models) in the instrument cluster flashes, there
is a malfunct ion in the brake system. By pressing the
! SET] button,
you can bring up a driver message which explains the ma lf u nction in .,

Parking b rake!
Thi s driver message appea rs together wi th t he ye llow J symbol
when there is a parking brake malfunction .
Malfunction starting assi st
Th is driver message appears if there is a starting assist malfunction .
T he automati c re lease of the park ing brake w hen s tarting is malfunc­
tioning. You have to release the parking brake manually by pressing
t he swi tch . Have the problem correc ted by an author ized A udi
dealer. •
Cruise control
Applies to veh icl es: w it h cru ise co ntro l
Switching on
The cruise control system makes it possible to drive at a
constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h).

The stored speed and the green symbol (CRUISE (US model)/ 0"

vary, depend ing on the type of display in your ve hicle . The indi­

CRUISE (US model)/ vf (Canadian model) w ill also light u p
in t he instr ument cluster.
The speed is kept constant by modifying engine power or through an act ive brake inte rvention .

• Alway s pay attention to the traffic around you when th e cruise
c ontrol is in operation . You are alwa ys respon sible for your speed
and th e di st a nce betwe en your vehicle and oth er vehicl es.
• Fo r rea sons of safet y, crui se contr ol should not be u sed in the
city, in stop-and-go traffi c, on twisting road s and when road
c ond ition s are poor (su ch as ice , fog , gra vel, he avy rain and hy dro­
planing ) -you could hav e an ac cident.
• Switch the crui se c ontrol off temporaril y when dri ving in
turning lane s, highw ay ex it s or in construction zones .

• Please note that unconsciously "resting" your foot on the
accelerator pedal cau ses cruise control not to brake. This is due to
the control system being overridden by the drive r's acceleration.

The brake lights illuminate as soon as the brakes apply
automatically. •

Changing speed
-Press the lever in the direction of the 0 => page 113,
fig. 111 or in the direction of the Qto increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
Change speed in increments of 1 mph (1 km/h) by lightly pressing the
lever. If you keep the lever p ressed down, you will alter your speed in
5 mph (10 km/h) increments .
You can also press the accelerator peda l down to increase your speed,
e .g . if you want to pass someone . The speed you saved earlier w ill
resume as soon as you let off of the accelerator pedal.
If, however, you exceed your saved speed by 5 mph (10 km/h) for
longer than 5 minutes, the cruise control will be turned off tempo ­
ra rily. The green symbol in the display turns white, the saved speed is
retained .•

Pre-selecting speed
You can pre-select your desired speed while the vehicle is
not moving.
- Turn on the ign ition.
- Pull lever into position 1 =>
page 113, fig. 111.
- Press the lever in the
0 or Q direction to increase or
decrease your speed.
- Let go of the lever to save that speed.
This function makes it possible, for example, to save the speed you
want before dr iv in g on the highway. Once on the highway, activate
the cruise contro l by pulling the lever toward
(D. •

Switching off
Temporary deactivation
-Step on the brake pedal, or
- Press the lever into position @ (not clicked into place)
=>
page 113, fig . 111, or
- Drive for longer than S minutes at more than S mph
(10 km/h) above the stored speed.
Switching off completely
-Press lever into position @ (clic ked into p lace), or
- Switch the ignition off.

How is the speed stored?

With th e sys te m switched on the speed is stored as follows:
- Drive at the speed you want . The speed must be between
20 and 95 mph (30 and 150 km/h) .
- Press the
!SET I button ~ fig . 116 to store the desired
speed .
After the ( SETI button is released, the current speed is stored and
m ain tained .
The saved speed is now shown in th e LED d isplay in the speedom et e r
by one or two illuminated red light diodes=>
page 123. At the same
time, the saved speed is a lso shown fo r a short time in the Info rma­
tion line~
page 125 .
(I) Tips
For safety reasons, the stored speed is deleted when the ignition is
turned off .•

eter scale .
- Press the lever upwards
0 and hold it . As long as you hold
the control switch down, the light diode display in the
speedometer LED display in the speedometer moves
forward and the speed is increased .
Reducing speed
- Press the lever downwards briefly Q. USA models : the
speed decreases by 2 .5 mph . Canada models: speed will
decrease by one mark on the speedometer scale . _,.

-Press the lever downwards Q and hol d it. As long as you
hold the control switch down, the light diode display in the
speedometer LED display moves backward and the speed
is reduced.
After releasing the control switch, the system regulates the speed to
the value just set.
After each adjustment, the newly-set speed is shown for a short time
in the Information line~
page 125.
[ i ] Tips
You can increase your speed at any time by stepping on the acceler ­
ator pedal. After you release the accelerator pedal, the system
adjusts back down to the speed you previously set. A new desired
speed can be stored at any time by pressing the [SET] button
~ page 119, fig. 116 . •

When setting the distance, the dri ver is responsible for adhering
to the respect ive national and country -specific regulations .
• Following other vehicles too closely increase s the risk of colli­
sions and serious personal injury.
• Setting short distance s to the traffic ahead reduce s the time
and d istanc e av ailable to bring your vehicle to a safe stop and
makes it even more neces sary to pay clo se attention to traffi c.
• Always use good judgment and select a safe following distance
for the traffic , road and weather condition s.

Us ing the a rrows and scale, you can detect how far it is to the vehi cle
in front of you.
• Open road : No arrow appears when the ve hicle is o n an o pen road
and there is no ve hicle ahead.
• Driving in t raffic : If a vehicle is detected ahead, the arrow moves
on t he sc ale. The g ree n area represents the distan ce set . When
approaching slow ly, the arrow moves from the
gray zone to the green
zone on the scale .
• Request for driver to as sume control: When approach ing rapidly,
the arrow serves as an early warning signal. If the distance selected is
exceeded or poss ibly no t reached, t he arrow moves in to the
red z o ne

The text messages and symbols shown in this area of the
display are not displayed permanently .

The different symbols for the time intervals appear if you change the
sett ings => fig. 123 .
Th e text message ... (three white dots) appears if a setting cannot be
implemented with the operating lever. The following are possible
reasons:
• If you pull the control lever towa rds you to resume speed but no
requested speed was set .
• If you push the lever up to increase (or down to reduce) speed
when no speed has been set previously.
• If you push the lever up to increase (or down to reduce) speed and
this speed is outside the range from 20 to 95 mph (Canada mode ls:
30 to 150 km/h) .
ACC functionality Limited
The text message ACC functionality limited appears when the ACC
system does not detect any objects over an extended time period. For
the time being, the d istance to veh icles up ahead is not being

controlled
. The ACC system is not switched off, so increased alertness
is required. The following may be reasons for the text message ACC
Functionally limited:
• The ACC sensor is dirty. The ACC system is not reacting, or is not
reacting correctly, to vehicles traveling ahead.
• It is possible that you are driving on a road with very light traffic
without anything at the s ide of the road (e .g . guard rails, traff ic s igns,
trees). As soon as a vehicle is detected by the system again, it returns
t o its contro l range and the text message disappears.
The ACC sensor is located in the r ig ht front trim grille
=> page 116,
fig. 113. If there is a loss of operation due to heavy contamination,
this area should cleaned to restore proper operat ion .
ACC not available
The text message ACC not available appears, for examp le, if the
t empe rature of the brakes is excessive. Adaptive cruise control is
temporarily not available. A warning tone sounds as a rem inder .
ACC not available!
The text message ACC not available! appears in the event of a
ma lf unct ion. Adaptive cruise control is turned off. A warn ing tone
sounds as a reminder . Have the system inspected by a qualified deal­
ersh ip.
ACC sensor blocked !
The text message ACC sensor blocked ! appears when the ACC System
can no longer guarantee safe detection of objects. Adaptive cruise
control is turned off. A warning tone sounds as a reminder.
To decide whether it is necessary to switch off the ACC (ACC sensor
blocked
!) or if it is only a temporary condition (ACC Functionally
limited), the system w ill also takes into consideration the outside
temperature and/or the windshield wiper operation .
Th e ACC sensor is d irty or blocked (e.g. leaves, snow).
The sensor should be cleaned to restore prope r sensor funct ion
=> pagell6,fig.113.
