The low beams only illuminate with the ign it ion turned on.
With the side marker lights or headlights switched on, the symbol next to the light switch illuminates

AUTO -Automatic headlight control*
With the switch in the AUTO position, the low beams are switched on
automatically depending on the ambient light, for example in a
tunnel, at dusk and when it is raining or snowing . When the low
beams are switched on, the
;oo :: symbol comes on. The low beams
remain switched on regardless of the ambient light when you turn on
the fog lights.
When you turn off the ignition, the low beams are automatically
switched off .
On vehicles w ith a rain sensor the headl ights switch on automatically
after a few windshield wiper passes . However, the instrument
lighting will not be switched on.
With automat ic headlight control, you also have the high-beam func­
tion available. However, if you have not switched high beams back to
low beams while driving with automatic headlight contro l, only the
low beams come on the next time you turn on automatic headlight
control. In order to return to high beams again, you first have to pull
the high beam lever back to the normal position and then push the lever forward.
Light sensor malfunction
In the event of a light sensor malfunction, the driver is notified in the
instrument cluster display:

For safety reasons, the low beams are turned on permanently w ith
the switch in
AUTO . However, you can continue to turn the lights on
and off using the light sw itch. Have the light sensor checked as soon
as possible at an authorized Audi dealer or other qualified workshop . .,_

ignition is switched on, there is a difference between vehicles with bi­
xenon lights and halogen lamps:
• On vehicles with b i-xenon lights only the dayt ime running lamps in
the headlights will come on.
• On vehicles with halogen lights the front fog lights, side marker
lights and tail lights come on automatically.

Never u se daytime running lights to see where you are going . They
are not bright enough and will not l et you see fa r en ough ah ead

as the day light fades away and eventu all y will go out completel y .,

in time to fading daylight by turning the light switch to po sition

(or "AUTO" if your car is equipped with this feat ure) to turn on your
headlights .•

Xenon headlights
After starting the engine, the xenon head lights are automat ically
adjusted to the load and ang le of t he vehicle (for e xamp le, dur ing
acce leration and brak ing) . This prevents oncom ing traffic from expe ­
r ienc ing unnecessary headlight glare from yo ur xenon head lights.
If the sy ste m is not opera ting p roperly, a warning symbol in t he Auto ­
Check Control is displayed~
page 35. •

Adaptive Light
Wh en driving around bends, the relevant ar ea of the road
is better illuminated .

The benefit of adaptive light is that the curve and the edge of the road
are better illum inate d~ fig. 68. Dyn am ic a daptive light is con trolled
automatically, depend ing on ve hicle speed and steering whee l angle .
When driving around bends, the headlights are contro lled accord ing
t o s teer ing whee l angle . So t hat there is no bla ck ho le ahea d of the
vehicle , the two ma in beams pivot at d ifferent angles.

The system works above a speed of about 6 mph (10 km/h) .•
Emergency flashers A

When the e merge ncy flashers are on, all fou r turn sig nals blink at the
same t ime. The turn signal indicator lights¢¢ in the i nstr ument
cl uste r, as well as the ligh t in the eme rge ncy flasher switch ~ blink
likewise . The emergency flashers also wo rk when the ignition is
t urned off. .,_

Liquid electrolyte leaked from a broken mirror g lass w ill damage any
plastic surfaces it comes in contact with. Clean up spi lled electro lyte
immediately with clear water and a sponge.

• Swit ching off the dimming function of the insid e rearview

e xterior mirrors.
• Automatic dimm ing for the mirror only operates properly if the

number of the set magnetic deflection zone appears on
the interior rear view mirror.
- Adjust the magnetic deflection zone by repeatedly pressing on the @button . The set mode automatically
deactivates after a few seconds. •

Calibrating the compass
The compass has to be recalibrated if the display is wrong
or inaccurate.
- Hold the@ button down until the letter C is displayed on
the interior rear view mirror.
- Drive in a circle at a speed of about 5 mph (10 km/h) until a direction is shown on the interior rear view mirror.
& WARNING
The digital compass is to be used as a directional aid only. Even
though you may want to look at it while you are driving, you must
still pay attention to traffic, road and weather conditions as well
as other possible hazards. •

The climate control system switches back on when a contro l button is
operated. •

The standard operating mode for all times of the year.
Turning on automatic mode
-Set the temperature between 60°F (+16°() and 84°F
(+28°().
- Press the (AUTO] button.
Automatic mode ensures constant temperatu res in the interior and
dehumidif ies the air inside the vehicle. Air temperature, volume and
distr ibution are controlled automat ical ly to reach or ma intain the
desired interior temperature as quickly as possible . Fluctuations in
exte rior tempe rature and the effects of temperature from the posi­
tion of the sun are compensated for automatically .
This operating mode works only in an adjustable temperature range
of 60°F ( +l6°C) to 84°F (+ 28°C) . If a temperature below 60°F
(+ 16°() is selected, LO appears in the display. At temperatures above
84°F (+28°() , HI is displayed. At both extreme sett ings, climate
control runs continuously at max imum cooling or heating power.
Th ere is no temperature regulation. •

Setting the temperature
The temperature can be set separately for the driver's
side and front passenger's side.

- Rotate the regulator=> fig. 100 to the left to reduce the
temperature, or to the right to increase the temperature.
The selected temperature appears on the climate control display.
When the MMI d isplay is turned on, the temperature setting appears
for a few seconds on the screen. •

The automa6cally preset fan speed can be reduced or
increased .

- Rotate the regulator to set the desired fan speed (air
volume).
The climate control system automatically regulates fan speed based
on the interior temperature . You can adjust the volume of air
produced by the fan to your own requirements.
When the MMI display is turned on, the fan speed setting appears for a few seconds on the screen.
[ i ] Tips
• It is possible that the fan speed may change automatically. This
occurs to ensure that the desired temperature set ting is reached as
quickly as possible.
• T he fan speed cannot be regulated separate ly for the driver and
front passenger. •

Recirculation mode (~ I
The recirculation mode prevents polluted outside air
from entering the vehicle interior.
Turning on recirculation mode
- Press the [o'b] => & button.
Turning off recirculation mode
-Press the~ button again, or
- press the
[AUTO] button.
In recirculation mode, air is drawn from the vehicle interior, filtered
and recirculated . We recommend selecting recirculation mode under
th e following conditions:
When driving through a tunnel or in a traffic jam so that exhaust
fumes and odors cannot enter the vehicle interior.
& WARNING
You should not use the recirculation mode for an extended period
since no fresh air is drawn in. With the air-conditioning switched
off, the windows can fog up, which increases the risk of an
accident! •

You can adjust the air distribution so that air flows from specific
vents. In position
-0-air flows only to the windows, in position(§], it
flows to the driver or passenger, and in position
-0-it flows to the
footwell. There are additional combinations available to adjust air
distribution as needed .
To regulate air distribution automatically, switch to
!AUTO J.
When the MMI display is turned on, the a ir distribution setting
appears for a few seconds on the screen. •

Defrost [®]
The windshield and side windows are defrosted or cleared
of condensation as quickly as possible.

Ignition Lock and ignition switch
Starting engine with the key
The ignition is switched on and the engine started with
the ignition key.

- Step on th e brake pedal and mov e th e selec tor lev er to th e
P or N posi tion.
- Press the key=> fig. 108 -the engine wi ll start.
By pressing the key without stepp ing on the clutch or the b rake, the
ign itio n is switc hed on and o ff . With the ignition on, the steeri ng
w heel is unlocked.
You can o nly remove the key with the ig nition switc hed off . To do this,
you have to press on the key ag ain. Wi th an a utomat ic transm iss io n,
the selector lever must be in the P pos ition.
W hen s tarting the engine, major electrica l loads a re swi tched off
temporarily .
After startin g a cold engine, there may be a brief period of increased
noise be cause the oil p ress ure mu st firs t b uild up in t he hydr auli c
valve adjuste rs. This is normal and not a cause for concern. If
the eng ine s hould not start immediately, the starting process is
a u tom atically st op ped aft er a sh ort t ime. Re peat sta rtin g p ro cedu re.
Driver message in the instrument cluster display
Press brake pedal to start engine
T h is message ap pears i f yo u do not step on the brake pedal to start
t he engine on a vehicle w ith an au toma tic transmission.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appea rs when at tempti ng to start the eng ine if the
sele ctor lever fo r the au tomatic t ransm ission is no t in the P or N po si·
t ion. The engine can on ly be sta rted wi th the selecto r in these posi­
tions.
Shift to P , otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in P .
This message app ears fo r sa fe ty reasons along with a wa rning sig nal.
It appea rs if the selector lever for t he automat ic transm iss io n is not
in the P posi tion af ter the ignition is sw itched off . M ov e t he se lector
lever to the P pos itio n, ot herw ise the vehicle is not secured against
rolling away . You a lso ca nnot lo ck th e ve hi cle u sing the locking
button on the door hand le or us ing the remote key.
& WARNING
• Always take the key with you whenever you leave your vehicle.
Otherwise, the engine could be started or electrical equipment
such a s the power windows could be operated . This can lead to
serious in jury.
• Never leave children or per sons requiring assistan ce unat­
tended in the vehicle. The doors can be locked u sing the remote
transmitter, p reventing people from escaping from the vehicle on
their own in the event of an emergency. Depending on the time of
year, people inside the vehicle can be exposed to very high or very low temperatures. ..,
