CAUTION zIf a vehicle is driven without releasing theparking brake, the brake will be overheated, resulting in ineffectiv
e braking and possible
brake failure. If this warning is displayed, release the park-ing brake.CAUTION zIf this warning stays illuminated and doesnot go out while driving, there is a danger ofineffective braking. If this happens, immedi-ately park your vehicle in a safe place andwe recommend you to have it checked.
zIf the brake warning disp
lay is displayed and
the brake warning lamp and the ABS warn-ing lamp are illuminated at the same time, the braking force dist
ribution function will
not operate, so the vehicle may be destabi-lised during sudden braking. Avoid suddenbraking and high-speed driving, stop thevehicle in a safe place, and we recommendyou to have it checked. zThe vehicle should be brought to a halt in thefollowing manner when brake performancehas deteriorated.•Depress the brake pedal harder than usual.Even if the brake pe
dal moves down to the
very end of its possible stroke, keep itpressed down hard.• Should the brakes fail, use regenerativebrake to reduce your speed and carefullypull the parking brake lever.Depress the brake pedal to operate the stoplamp to alert the vehicles behind you.

E00626001073
This is a device that reduces the possibility ofrear end collisions by the rapid and automaticblinking of the hazard warning lamps to alertvehicles approaching from behind duringsudden braking. When the emergency stopsignal system operates, the hazard warningindicator lamp in the instrument clusterblinks rapidly at the same time.
E00607102489
Environmental conditions can have an effecton braking. During sudden braking whenthere is snow, ice, oil, water etc. on the roadsurface, a skid may occur. In this situation, steering control and braking effectiveness isreduced and the stopping distance isincreased. The vehicle may also go into anuncontrolled spin. The ABS helps prevent the wheels from lock-ing during braking, thus maintaining direc-
tional stability, ensuring controllability andproviding optimum braking force. zAlways maintain the same distance fromthe vehicle in front of you as you wouldfor a vehicle not equipped with ABS.Compared with vehicles not fitted withABS, your vehicle may require a longerstopping distance in the following cases:•Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads.• Driving with snow traction device (tyrechains) installed.•Driving on roads where the road surfaceis pitted or has other differences in sur-face height.• Driving on bumpy roads or other poordriving surfaces.
zOperation of ABS is not restricted to situ-ations where brakes are applied suddenly. This system may also operate to preventwheel lock when you are driving overmanholes, steel road-work plates, or thevehicle is driven over steps or level differ-ences in the road, road markings, or othersurfaces which are difficult for the wheelsto grip.
Emergency stop signal sys-tem
*CAUTION zIf the ABS warning or ASC warning is dis-played, the emergency stop signal systemmay not operate. Refer to “ABS warninglamp/display” on page 7-30.Refer to “ASC warn
ing display” on page
7-34.NOTE
z[Activating condition for the emergency stopsignal system]It activates when all
of the following condi-
tions are met.•The vehicle speed is approximately 55km/h or higher.
•The brake pedal has been depressed, andthe system judges that it was sudden brak-ing from the vehicle deceleration and theoperating condition of the anti-lock brakesystem (ABS).[Deactivating condition for the emergencystop signal system]It deactivates when one of the following con-ditions is met.•The brake pedal is released.• The hazard warning flasher switch ispressed.•The system judges that it was not suddenbraking from the vehicle deceleration andthe operating condition of the anti-lockbrake system (ABS).

allow air to cool the brakes between applica-tions.Furthermore, it might be able to reduce theload of the brakes by using the regenerativebrake force.Leave plenty of room between the front ofyour vehicle and the preceding vehicle. If the caravan begins to sway or becomes dif-ficult to handle, gently slow down or applythe independent trailer brakes (if fitted) NOTthe vehicle brakes. Stop the vehicle andtrailer in a safe location. Examine the tyres ofthe trailer closely for damage. If you find thedamage of tyre, it is recommended that tyresbe inspected by a MITSUBISHI MOTORSAuthorised Service Point or a tyre retailerbefore proceeding further. Note that treadseparation [separation of the tread band fromthe body of the tyre] of trailer tyres which areaged, and/or loaded near their load limit, canbe difficult to detect, especially on caravanswhere tyres are covered. One cause of swaying is poor trailer balanceand until this has been overcome the swayingwill recur. Relocate the load in your trailer orcaravan and re-assess the problem. If the wheels of your vehicle, the trailer orcaravan leave the road surface and enter the
unsealed edge of the road, resist the urge topull it back quickly. Wait for a section wherethe levels of the road and unsealed edge arecomparable and then ease back onto thesealed section of the road with as little swayas possible.Try to maximise the distance between yourcaravan and passing or overtaking semi-trail-ers or other heavy vehicles. This will reducethe suction forces between the two and mini-mise disturbance of the caravan.Do not apply the brakes severely, be alert andanticipate trouble far enough ahead to enableyou to apply the brakes smoothly and evenly.Do not make any manoeuvres before ensuringthat the road behind and in front of your vehi-cle is clear. This will normally occur as a result of somemechanical failure. If your vehicle shouldoverheat, stop and check for a loose or brokenwater pump drive belt/ oil pump/cooling oil, ablocked radiator air intake or a low coolantlevel. If these items are satisfactory the over-heating could be caused by a number of
mechanical causes that would have to bechecked at a MITSUBISHI MOTORSAuthorised Service Point. If your vehicle is in good mechanical condi-tion and it overheats due to heavy traffic con-ditions or high air temperatures, additionalcooling may be obtained by the followingmethods: zReduce your speed by 15 km/h if towingat high speeds.

CAUTION zIf the engine overheats,
reference should be
made to “Engine overheating” section of“For emergencies” prior to taking any cor-rective action.

E01000404039
The engine oil used has a significant effect onthe engine’s performance, service life andstartability. Be sure to use oil of the recom-mended quality and appropriate viscosity. All engines consume a certain amount of oilduring normal operation. Therefore, it isimportant to check the oil level at regularintervals or before starting a long trip.1. Park the car on a horizontal surface.2. Switch off the engine.3. Wait a few minutes.4. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with aclean cloth.5. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes.
6. Remove the dipstick and read the oillevel, which should always be within therange indicated7. If the oil level is below the specified limit, remove the cap located on the cylinderhead cover and add enough oil to raise thelevel to within the specified range. Do notoverfill to avoid engine damage. Be sureto use the specified engine oil and do notmix various types of oil.8. After adding oil, close the cap securely.9. Confirm the oil level by repeating step 4to 6.
zSelect engine oil of the proper SAE vis-cosity number according to the atmos-pheric temperature.SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-40engine oils can only be used if they meetACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or A5/B5 and APISG (or higher) specifications. zUse engine oil conforming to the follow-ing classification:•API classification: “For service SG” orhigher•ILSAC certificated oil•ACEA classification:“For service A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, orA5/B5”

A transparent engine coolant reserve tank (A)and EV cooling system reserve tank (B) islocated in the engine compartment. The coolant level in this tank should be keptbetween the “LOW” and “FULL” markswhen measured while the engine and theplug-in hybrid EV system are cold.
The cooling system is a closed system andnormally the loss of coolant should be veryslight. A noticeable drop in the coolant levelcould indicate leakage. If this occurs, we rec-ommend you to have the system checked assoon as possible.
If the level should drop below the “LOW”level on the reserve tank, open the lid and addcoolant. Also, if the reserve tank is completely empty, remove the radiator cap (C) or the reservetank cap (D) and add coolant until the levelreaches the filler neck. The engine coolant and the plug-in hybrid EVsystem coolant contains an ethylene glycolanti-corrosion agent. Some parts of theengine and the plug-in hybrid EV system arecast aluminium alloy, and periodic changingof the engine coolant and the plug-in hybridEV system coolant are necessary to preventcorrosion of these parts.
NOTE
zUse of additives is
not recommended since
they may reduce the effectiveness of addi-tives already included in the engine oil. Itmay result in failure of the mechanicalassembly.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS GENUINE Coolanthas excellent protection against corrosion andrust formation of all metals including alumin-ium and can avoid blockages in the radiator, heater, cylinder head, engine block, etc.Because of the necessity of this anti-corrosionagent, the coolant must not be replaced withplain water even in summer. The requiredconcentration of anti-freeze differs dependingon the expected ambient temperature.Above -35 °C: 50 % concentration of anti-freezeBelow -35 °C: 60 % concentration of anti-freeze
If the temperatures in your area drop belowfreezing, there is the danger that the coolantin the engine, plug-in hybrid EV system orradiator could freeze and cause severe dam-age to the engine and/or radiator. Add a suffi-cient amount of anti-freeze to the coolant toprevent it from freezing. The concentration should be checked beforethe start of cold weather and anti-freezeadded to the system if necessary.
