Alarm – general information
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle. The alarm is automatically armed (p. 163) whenever the vehicle is locked with the remotekey. When armed, the alarm continuously monitors a number of points on the vehicle. The followingconditions will trigger the alarm:
• The hood is forced open.
• The trunk is forced open
• A door is forced open.
• The ignition slot is tampered with.
• An attempt is made to start the vehicle with a non-approved key (a key not coded to thecar's ignition).
• The battery is disconnected (while the alarmis armed).
• The siren is disconnected when the alarm isdisarmed.
A message will appear in the information displayif a fault should occur in the alarm system. Con-tact a trained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian.
NOTE
Do not attempt to repair any of the compo- nents in the alarm system yourself. This couldaffect the insurance policy on the vehicle.

Alarm indicator
The status of the alarm system is indicated by the red indicator light on the dashboard (seeillustration):
• Indicator light off: the alarm is not armed (p. 163)

• The indicator light flashes rapidly before theremote key is inserted in the ignition slot and the ignition is put in mode

Alarm – arming/disarming The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle.
Arming the alarm
–Press the Lock button on the remote key. One long flash of the turn signals will confirmthat the alarm (p. 162) is armed.

Disarming the alarm
–Press the Unlock button on the remote key.
> Two short flashes from the car's direction indicators confirm that the alarm has been deactivated and that all doors areunlocked.

Alarm signal
An audible (p. 162) signal is given by a battery powered siren. The alarm cycle lasts for 30 sec-onds.
The visual alarm signal is given by flashing all turn signals for approximately 5 minutes or untilthe alarm is turned off.

Alarm – turning off
The alarm system provides a warning if an attempt is made to break into the vehicle.
If the alarm is sounding, it can be stopped by pressing the Unlock button on the remote key orby inserting the remote key in the ignition slot.Two short flashes from the car's turn signals con-firm that the alarm has been turned off.

Alarm-related functions
The following is general information regarding the alarm system in your vehicle.
Automatic re-armingIf the doors are unlocked, the locks will automati- cally re-engage (re-lock) and the alarm will re-arm after 2 minutes unless a door or the trunkhas been opened.
Remote key not functioningIf the remote key is not functioning properly, thealarm can be turned off and the vehicle can bestarted as follows:
1. Open the driver's door with the key blade.
>This will trigger the alarm.
2. To turn off the alarm, insert the remote key
into the ignition slot (also on vehicles with the optional keyless drive). 3. Start the engine.

Stability system – operation
Operation
Sport mode
The stability system is always activated and can- not be switched off.However, the driver can select Sport mode, which offers more
active driving characteristics. Sport mode can be selected in
the MY CAR menus, see My Car – introduction (p. 71).
In Sport mode, the engine management system
monitors movement of the accelerator pedal and steering wheel for sportier driving by allowingmore lateral movement of the rear wheels beforeESC is activated. Under certain circumstances, such as when driv- ing with snow chains, or driving in deep snow orloose sand, it may be advisable to temporarily use Sport mode for maximum tractive force.
If the driver releases pressure on the accelerator pedal, ETC will also activate to help stabilize thevehicle. To switch to Sport mode:
Sport mode remains active until the driver
switches it off in the menu or until the engine is switched off. ETC will return to normal modewhen the engine is restarted.

Adjustable steering force *
Steering force increases with the speed of the vehicle to give the driver enhanced sense ofcontrol and stability. At low speed the vehicle iseasy to steer in order to facilitate parking, etc.

NOTE
This steering force level menu function can- not be accessed when the vehicle is inmotion.
NOTE
In certain situations, the power steering may become too warm and will have to be tempo-rarily cooled down. While this is happening,the power steering effect will be reducedslightly and somewhat more effort may berequired to turn the steering wheel. If this occurs, a message will be displayed in the instrument panel.
Road Sign Information (RSI) * –
introduction
RSI is a feature that helps the driver see road signs with the posted speed limit.
Introduction
Examples of readable road signs
If the vehicle passes a sign showing the speed limit, this will be displayed in the center console.
WARNING
RSI does not function in all situations and is only intended to provide supplementary infor-mation. The driver is always responsible for operating the vehicle safely.

Road Sign Information (RSI) – operation
Speed limit information
When RSI registers a road sign showing the speed limit, this sign is displayed as a symbol onthe instrument panel.
A speed limit or a limited access road

In situations where RSI detects a sign indicatingthe end of a particular speed limit or other indi-rect speed limit-related information (e.g., Freewayends, Expressway ends, etc.) this information willbe displayed in the instrument panel for approx.10 seconds, after which no road sign informationwill be shown until the next speed limit-relatedsign has been detected.

Speed alert
The driver can opt to be alerted if the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than3 mph (5 km/h). The alert is given when the sym-bol with the posted speed limit in the instrumentpanel begins to flash. To activate speed alert:
• Check the Speed alert box in

Sensus NavigationIf the vehicle is equipped with Sensus Navigation, speed-related information is gathered from thissystem if: •The speed limit previously detected by RSI is no longer considered valid and no new speedlimit sign has been detected.

increase/decrease the speed in 1-mph or 1- km/h increments. Release the button whenyou have reached the desired speed.
NOTE
• A temporary increase in speed by press- ing the accelerator pedal, for less than1 minute (e.g. when passing another car),does not affect the current cruise controlsetting. The vehicle will automaticallyreturn to the previously set speed whenthe accelerator pedal is released.
• If one of the cruise control buttons iskept depressed for more than approx.1 minute cruise control is disengaged.The engine must then be switched off inorder to reset cruise control.

Toggling between ACC and CC (standard Cruise Control)
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps the driver maintain a safe distance/time interval to the vehi-cle ahead.
Switching from ACC to CCThis may be useful if, for example, the radar sen- sor is obstructed in some way. See AdaptiveCruise Control – limitations (p. 185) for addi-tional information.

WARNING
Switching from ACC to CC means that:
• Your vehicle will
no longer automatically
maintain a set distance to a vehicle ahead.
• Only the set speed will be maintained andthe driver will have to apply the brakeswhen needed.
Switching from CC to ACC
Switch off cruise control by pressing once or
twice as needed according to the instructions in the previous section "Turning ACC off com- pletely." The next time the system is switched on,ACC will be reactivated.

WARNING
The brake pedal moves when the adaptive cruise control system modulates the brakes.Do not rest your foot under the brake pedal.
The ACC system is designed to smoothly regu- late speed. However, the driver must apply thebrakes in situations that require immediate brak-ing. This applies when there are great differencesin speed between vehicles, or if the vehicle aheadbrakes suddenly.
WARNING
Due to limitations in the radar sensor, braking may occur unexpectedly or not at all, seeAdaptive Cruise Control – limitations (p. 185).
Adaptive Cruise Control can be put in active mode at any permitted speed. However, if thevehicle's speed falls below 18 mph (30 km/h) orif engine speed (rpm) becomes too low, ACC dis-engages (goes into standby mode) and will nolonger modulate the brakes. The driver will thenhave to maintain a safe distance to the vehicleahead.
WARNING
When Adaptive Cruise Control is in standby mode or is switched off completely, thebrakes will not be modulated automatically.The driver must assume full control over thevehicle.
Warning light—driver braking requiredAdaptive Cruise Control can exert brake force that is equivalent to approximately 40% of thevehicle's total braking capacity. In situationsrequiring more brake force than ACC can provideand if the driver does not apply the brakes, anaudible signal from the Collision Warning systemwill sound and warning light will illuminate (see Collision warning * – function (p. 203)) in the
windshield to alert the driver to react.
NOTE
Strong sunlight, reflections, extreme light con- trasts, the use of sunglasses, or if the driver isnot looking straight ahead may make thewarning symbol in the windshield difficult tosee.
WARNING
Adaptive Cruise Control only warns of vehicles detected by the radar sensor, see AdaptiveCruise Control – limitations (p. 185). In somecases there may be no warning or the warn-ing may be delayed. The driver should alwaysapply the brakes when necessary.
Steep inclines and/or heavy loadsACC is primarily intended for use on fairly level roads. The system may have difficulty maintainingthe correct distance to a vehicle ahead on steepinclines, if the vehicle is carrying a heavy load oris towing a trailer. In these situations, the drivershould always be prepared to apply the brakes ifnecessary.

Radar sensor
The radar sensor is designed to help detect cars or larger vehicles driving in the same direction asyour vehicle, in the same lane.
The radar sensor and its limitationsIn addition to being used by the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), the radar sensor is also used byDistance Alert (see Distance Alert – introduction(p. 190)) and Collision Warning with Full Auto-brake and Pedestrian Detection (see Collisionwarning – introduction (p. 201)).
WARNING
• If there is visible damage to the front grille or you suspect that the radar sensormay be damaged in any way, contact atrained and qualified Volvo service techni-cian as soon as possible. The radar sen-sor may only function partially (or not atall) if it is damaged or is not securely fas-tened in place.
• Accessories or other objects, such asextra headlights, must not be installed infront of the grille.
• Modification of the radar sensor couldmake its use illegal.
The radar sensor's capacity to detect vehiclesahead is impeded: •
if the radar sensor is obstructed and cannotdetect other vehicles, for example in heavyrain, or if snow or other objects are obscuringthe radar sensor.
NOTE
Keep the area in front of the radar sensor clean.

if the speed of vehicles ahead is significantly different from your own speed.

Adaptive Cruise Control – limitations
The ACC cannot cover all driving situations and traffic, weather and road conditions.
Situations where ACC may not function optimally
WARNING
• The radar sensor has a limited field of vision. In some situations it may detect avehicle later than expected or not detectother vehicles at all.
• If ACC is not functioning properly, cruisecontrol will also be disabled.

Distance Alert – introduction
Distance Alert is part of Adaptive Cruise Control and is a function that provides information aboutthe time interval to the vehicle ahead.
IntroductionDistance Alert is active at speeds above approxi- mately 18 mph (30 km/h). Time interval informa-tion is only given for a vehicle that is drivingahead of your vehicle in the same direction. Noinformation is provided for vehicles driving towardyou, moving very slowly, or at a standstill.
Amber warning light 5

An amber warning light in the windshield glows steadily if your vehicle is closer to the one aheadthan the set time interval.
NOTE
Distance Alert only monitors distance to the vehicle ahead while Adaptive Cruise Control isin standby mode or off.
WARNING
Distance Alert only indicates the distance to the vehicle ahead. It does not affect thespeed of your vehicle.

Distance Alert – operation
Distance Alert is part of Adaptive Cruise Control and is a function that provides information aboutthe time interval to the vehicle ahead.
Press the button in the center instrument panel to switch this function on or off. The indicatorlight in the button illuminates when the functionis on. Depending on the optional equipment selected, there may not be room for a Distance Alert but-ton in the center console. In this case, the func-tion is controlled through the menu system.
