Cleaning the exterior of your vehicle
Vehicle care 10-5
10
The salt and other chemicals spread on theroads in some areas in winter can have aharmful effect on the vehicle body. Youshould therefore wash the vehicle as often aspossible in accordance with our care-instruc-tions. It is recommended to have a preserva-tive applied and the underfloor protectionchecked before and after the cold weatherseason. After washing your vehicle, wipe off allwaterdrops from the rubber parts around thedoors to prevent the doors from freezing.

The vehicle should only be polished if thepaintwork has become stained or lost its lus-tre. Do not polish parts with a mat coatingand the plastic bumpers. Doing so couldcause stains or damage the finish.
E00901300808
Use a sponge or chamois leather. If a car wax adheres on a grey or black roughsurface of the bumper, moulding or lamps, the surface becomes white. In such a case, wipe it off using lukewarm water and softcloth or chamois leather.

In order to prevent spots and corrosion ofchrome parts, wash with water, dry thor-oughly, and apply a special protective coat-ing. This should be done more frequently inwinter.
•If your vehicle is equi
pped with a roof rails,
consult a car wash opera
tor before using the
car washer.•If your vehicle has rain
sensor wipers, place
the wiper switch lever in the “OFF” posi-tion to deactivate the rain sensor.

the plastic parts.
If they touch the plastic
parts, wipe them off

Engine oil
Maintenance 11-5
11
E01000404039
The engine oil used has a significant effect onthe engine’s performance, service life andstartability. Be sure to use oil of the recom-mended quality and appropriate viscosity. All engines consume a certain amount of oilduring normal operation. Therefore, it isimportant to check the oil level at regularintervals or before starting a long trip.1. Park the car on a horizontal surface.2. Switch off the engine.3. Wait a few minutes.4. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with aclean cloth.5. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes.
6. Remove the dipstick and read the oillevel, which should always be within therange indicated7. If the oil level is below the specified limit, remove the cap located on the cylinderhead cover and add enough oil to raise thelevel to within the specified range. Do notoverfill to avoid engine damage. Be sureto use the specified engine oil and do notmix various types of oil.8. After adding oil, close the cap securely.9. Confirm the oil level by repeating step 4to 6.
zSelect engine oil of the proper SAE vis-cosity number according to the atmos-pheric temperature.SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 5W-40engine oils can only be used if they meetACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 or A5/B5 and APISG (or higher) specifications. zUse engine oil conforming to the follow-ing classification:•API classification: “For service SG” orhigher•ILSAC certificated oil•ACEA classification:“For service A1/B1, A3/B3, A3/B4, orA5/B5”

Engine coolant/Plug-in hybrid EV system coolant11-6 Maintenance

E01000503105
A transparent engine coolant reserve tank (A)and EV cooling system reserve tank (B) islocated in the engine compartment. The coolant level in this tank should be keptbetween the “LOW” and “FULL” markswhen measured while the engine and theplug-in hybrid EV system are cold.
The cooling system is a closed system andnormally the loss of coolant should be veryslight. A noticeable drop in the coolant levelcould indicate leakage. If this occurs, we rec-ommend you to have the system checked assoon as possible.
If the level should drop below the “LOW”level on the reserve tank, open the lid and addcoolant. Also, if the reserve tank is completely empty, remove the radiator cap (C) or the reservetank cap (D) and add coolant until the levelreaches the filler neck. The engine coolant and the plug-in hybrid EVsystem coolant contains an ethylene glycolanti-corrosion agent. Some parts of theengine and the plug-in hybrid EV system arecast aluminium alloy, and periodic changingof the engine coolant and the plug-in hybridEV system coolant are necessary to preventcorrosion of these parts.
NOTE
zUse of additives is
not recommended since
they may reduce the effectiveness of addi-tives already included in the engine oil. Itmay result in failure of the mechanicalassembly.

MITSUBISHI MOTORS GENUINE Coolanthas excellent protection against corrosion andrust formation of all metals including alumin-ium and can avoid blockages in the radiator, heater, cylinder head, engine block, etc.Because of the necessity of this anti-corrosionagent, the coolant must not be replaced withplain water even in summer. The requiredconcentration of anti-freeze differs dependingon the expected ambient temperature.Above -35 °C: 50 % concentration of anti-freezeBelow -35 °C: 60 % concentration of anti-freeze
If the temperatures in your area drop belowfreezing, there is the danger that the coolantin the engine, plug-in hybrid EV system orradiator could freeze and cause severe dam-age to the engine and/or radiator. Add a suffi-cient amount of anti-freeze to the coolant toprevent it from freezing. The concentration should be checked beforethe start of cold weather and anti-freezeadded to the system if necessary.

Open the washer fluid reservoir cap andcheck the level of washer fluid with the dip-stick.If the level is low, replenish the containerwith washer fluid.

The use of an improperanti-freeze can cause corrosion of the alu-minium components. zDo not use water to adjust the concentrationof coolant. zConcentrations exceeding 60 % will result ina reduction of both the anti-freeze and cool-ing performance thus adversely affecting theengine.

Look under the body of your vehicle to checkfor fuel, engine coolant, oil and exhaust gasleaks.Operate the combination lamp switch tocheck that all lamps are functioning properly. If the lamps do not illuminate, the probablecause is a blown fuse or defective lamp bulb.Check the fuses first. If there is no blownfuse, check the lamp bulbs. For information regarding the inspection andreplacement of the fuses and the bulbs, referto “Fuses” on page 11-15 and “Replacementof lamp bulbs” on page 11-21.
NOTE
zDo not allow the wiper arm to fall onto thewindows glass; it could damage the glass.
