Confirm SELF-DIAGNOSTIC
RESULTS“LOCK MODE”is dis-

1. Turn the ignition switch to OFF posi-
tion.
2. Turn the ignition key switch to ON
position with a registered key.
(Do not start engine.) Wait for 5 sec-
onds.
3. Return the key to the OFF position.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice (total of
three cycles).
5. Start the engine.

1. Warm up engine.
2. Turn ignition switch OFF.
3. Release fuel pressure.
Refer to ªReleasing Fuel Pressureº in EC section.
4. Remove ignition coils.
5. Remove spark plugs.
IClean area around plug with compressed air before removing
the spark plug.
6. Attach a compression tester to No. 1 cylinder.
7. Depress accelerator pedal fully to keep throttle valve wide
open.
8. Crank engine and record highest gauge indication.
9. Repeat the measurement on each cylinder as shown above.
IAlways use a fully-charged battery to obtain specified
engine speed.

10. If cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a
small amount of engine oil into the cylinder through the spark
plug hole and retest compression.
IIf adding oil improves cylinder compression, piston rings
may be worn or damaged. If so, replace piston rings after
checking piston.
IIf pressure stays low, a valve may be sticking or seating
improperly. Inspect and repair valve and valve seat. Refer
to SDS, EM-178. If valve or valve seat is damaged
excessively, replace them.
IIf compression in any two adjacent cylinders is low and if add-
ing oil does not improve compression, there is leakage past the
gasket surface. If so, replace cylinder head gasket.
11. Reinstall spark plugs, ignition coils and fuel pump fuse.
12. Perform ªSelf-diagnosis Procedureº referring to EC section.
Erase DTC if any DTC appears.

AEM308 20 mm (0.79 in) dia.
Use compression tester whose end (rubber
portion) is less than 20 mm (0.79 in) dia.
Otherwise, it may be caught by cylinder
head during removal.

if necessary.
InstallationNCEM00141. Install crankshaft sprocket on crankshaft.
IMake sure mating marks on crankshaft sprocket face front
of engine.
2. Position crankshaft so that No. 1 piston is at TDC and key way
is at 12 o'clock.
3. Install slack side timing chain guide and timing chain tension
guide.
4. Install timing chain on crankshaft sprocket.
ISet timing chain by aligning its mating mark with that on
the crankshaft sprocket.
IMake sure sprocket's mating mark faces engine front.

27. Install rocker cover and tighten bolts in numerical order as
shown in the figure.
28. Install spark plugs.
29. Install ignition coils.
30. Install engine front mounting.
31. Install front exhaust tube.
32. Install front undercover.
33. Install front right splash cover.
34. Install front right wheel.
35. Install power steering pulley and pump with bracket.
To check power steering fluid, refer to MA section (ªChecking
Power Steering Fluid and Linesº, ªCHASSIS AND BODY
MAINTENANCEº).
36. Drive belts.
For adjusting drive belt deflection, refer to MA section (ªCheck-
ing Drive Beltsº, ªENGINE MAINTENANCEº).
37. Reinstall parts in reverse order of removal.

20. Remove cylinder head bolts.
21. Remove cylinder head with manifolds.
IHead warpage or cracking could result from removing in
incorrect order.
ICylinder head bolts should be loosened in two or three
steps.

IUse a reliable straightedge and feeler gauge to check the flat-
ness of cylinder head mating surface.
ICheck along six positions shown in figure.
Head surface flatness:
Standard: Less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 in)
Limit: 0.1 mm (0.004 in)
If beyond the specified limit, replace or resurface it.
Resurfacing limit:
The limit for cylinder head resurfacing is determined by the
amount of cylinder block resurfacing.
Amount of cylinder head resurfacing is ªAº.
Amount of cylinder block resurfacing is ªBº.
The maximum limit is as follows:
A + B = 0.2 mm (0.008 in)
After resurfacing cylinder head, check that camshaft rotates freely
by hand. If resistance is felt, replace cylinder head.
Nominal cylinder head height:
117.8 - 118.0 mm (4.638 - 4.646 in)
