The In
strument Cluster is the primary electronic control module for the speedomete
r, tachometer, coolant temperature, fuel
level, driver information (Message Centre) and warning lamps.
The Instrument Cluster also:
- provides input / output informatio n signals for use by other modules.
- acts as a protocol converter (software language translator - the languages used on each network are very similar, but
neither can be directly interp reted by the opposite system) for communication between all modules on both the CAN and
SCP multiplexed networks. The Instrument Cluster is the only module on the vehicle which communicates between the two
networks.
Instrument Cluster Gauges

Although the gauges look like conventional analogue gauges, each pointer is driven by a stepper motor to provide more

The c

mplexity of the electronics involved with the Instrument Cluster and the two multiplexed communication networks
which are connected to it, preclude the use of workshop genera l electrical test equipment. Therefore, reference should be
made to the PDU User Guide for detailed instructions on testing the Instrument Clus ter and associated circuits.
The PDU systematically test s and analyses all functions of the Instrument Clus ter, the various systems controlled by it and
individual sensors which are attached to each separate system.
Where a fault involving a remote sensor e. g. water temperature sensor, is indicated, before replacing the component, some
basic diagnostic methods may be necessary to confirm that connections are good and that wiring is not damaged.
Diagnostics using the PDU is via the CAN network, accessed at the diagnostic connector on the car.
Replaceable Parts
The only replaceable part s
are, General Illumination Bulbs, Direction Indicator Warning Bu
lbs and Main Beam Warning Bulb,
which are all of the conventional filament type. Other warning lamps are LEDs and are not replaceable.

Information and Message Center - Information and Message Center
Description and Operation

The Driver's Information / Message Center has a liquid crystal display and is located at the lower area of the Major
Instrument Cluster.
The message center displays messages in text form for the driver, including odometer readings an d trip computer data. It
can also provide information normally covered by conventional wa rning lamps or typically indicate that a feature such as the
Automatic Stability Control is operating.
Located above the message center are two lamps, red for warning and amber for caution. When a message is displayed, the
appropriate lamp will illuminate to attract the driver's attention and to signify the importance of the message. The lamps
also illuminate simultaneously for some warnings and for some non-text warnin gs - refer to the Drivers Handbook for
variations in local markets.
Trip Computer

Pressing the trip switch on the left stalk of the steering colu mn switch assembly activates the trip computer which displays
trip data on the message center. Warning and Information messages have priority ov er trip data; if a driver information
message is displayed prior to activation of the trip computer , the trip data will appear for 10 seconds only, before being

The functi
on of the parking aid is to prov
ide an audible warning to the driver of the distance to obstacles near the rear
bumper of the vehicle when parking or travelling at a slow sp eed. The system provides an assistance to the driver when
parking in order to help avoid collision with obstacles.
The sensor range at the rear of the vehicl e should be 1.8 meters. This should extend the full width of the rear bumper and
reduce to 50 cm at the vehicle co rners. The vertical range is adequate to protec t the highest and lowest points of the rear of
the vehicle. The system will detect curbs with heights of at least 18 cm. Obstacles, such as curbs, that are low enough to
pass under the vehicle until they make contact with the tires will not be detected.
The system activates a specific speaker with a tone signifying the distance to the obstacle. The tone consists of a beep and
defined space ratio which varies depending on the calculated distance. When the distance to the obstacle is less than 20 cm
the speaker tone is continuous.
The parking aid is continuously in operation, unless towing wh en the system automatically switches off. If the reverse aid
develops a fault the tone will sound continuously for three seconds when the igni tion is switched on or the reverse gear is
selected.

The interference suppression module (where fitted) connects to the generator main terminal 'B +' and a ground stud on the
rear face of the generator.
A multi-plug (3 pin) is connecte d to the rear of the generator:
Pin 1 not connected. Pin 2 ignition supply to the regulator. Pin 3 output to the charge warning lamp.
Generator - Internal Circuit Diagram

As with most vehicle ac generators, there is only minimal residual magnet ism in the field (rotor) windings. To compensate
for this and to achieve high current outp ut at low engine speed, the field is excited by battery voltage supplied to the
generator at the 'IG' terminal.
To control the level of field excitation and ultimately, generator output, the voltag e supplied to the field (rotor) is controlled
by the voltage regulator.
The voltage regulator senses (at the 'B' terminal) battery terminal voltage, which within limits is proportional to the state o f
charge of the battery. The regulator then adjusts the supplied voltage between the 'IG' terminal and the regulator 'F'
terminal (a continuously variable process) to maintain the 'B+' output at a constant level.

CAUTION: The engine must not be running when multiplugs are connected or disconnected.
Check that the main B+ terminal is clean and tight.
Check that the IG terminal is clean and ma king good contact; if this connection is faulty, the generator will never function
correctly.
Disconnect the multi-plug at th e rear of the generator. With the engine not running and with the ignition switched on, use a
DMM to check for battery voltage between the centre pin on the multi-plug connector and a good vehicle ground. If the
measured voltage is correct, switch off the ignition and reconnect the multi-plug.
Multiplug Connector

If no voltage or low voltage is indicated, check for continuity of the harness between the multi-plug and Fuse 5 (10A) in the
Engine Compartment Fusebox - Left Hand Si de. Repair any damage to the harness if necessary. It should be noted that if
Fuse 5 has blown, the starter motor will not operate and the Engine Control Module will not receive an ignition supply.
Consequently, the engine will not st art, even with a slave battery.
Start the engine and test for correct ch arge or voltage level; check as described previously. If not charging and the
generator is being driven ie. no be lt slipping - renew the generator.

WARNING: Do not use a naked flame in areas where fuel or oil have been spilt. Clean the area of residual oil
and fuel and wait un til the fuel spill has fully evaporated.
• CAUTIONS:
When using a heat source make sure that it is localised and caus es no damage to surrounding materials.
Where the repair procedure indicates that a glue lined heat shrink sleeve should be applied, apply sufficient
heat to the glue lined heat shrink to melt the glue in order to provide a water tight seal. Do not over heat the glue
lined heat shrink sleeve so that the wi ring harness insulation becomes damaged.
Using a suitable heat source, shrink the sleeve over the butt splice.
If further pre-terminated wiri ng harness(s) are to be installed to the sa me electrical connector, make sure that the
lead is cut at a different length to the previous joint. This makes sure that the splices will, where possible, be
staggered on the wiring ha rness and prevent a bulk of splices in one area.
When all of the splices have been made, fit the terminal(s) to the electrical connector, taking care that the terminals
are correctly orientated.
Install the wiring harness cove r and secure with adhesive electrical tape. Do not cove r the wiring harness right to the electrical connector as the terminals must have a little movement and no t be firmly bound to the electrical connector or wiring harness. Make sure that the cable identification sleeve(s) are showing at the wiring harness electrical
connector.

The BPM electronically controls many vehicle functions. It responds when a switch is actuated by providing output signals to
the appropriate devices, either di rectly or indirectly via relays. In addition the BPM establishes an ISO network link with the
Security and Locking Control Module (SLC M) and utilizes the SCP network to exchange data between the body system
modules.
The following tables are publis hed for guidance purposes and only provide a rough indication of the correlation between
circuit inputs and outputs; due to the complexity and necess ary functional interaction required for the vehicle there are
many circuits where inpu ts and outputs overlap.
Malfunction of modules must always be analyzed using the PDU as recommended in Diagnosis and Testing.
