-To help prevent damage to the wiper sys ­
tem, a lways loosen blades which are frozen
to the windshield before operating wipers .
- To help prevent damage to wiper blades, do
not use gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner, or
other solvents on or near the wiper blades.
- To help prevent damage to the wiper arms
or other components, do not attempt to move the wipers by hand.
@ Tips
- Comme rcial hot waxes applied by automatic
car washes affect the how easi ly the glass
surface can be cleaned.
- You can also use the service position, for ex ­
ample, if you want to protect the windsh ield
from icing by using a cover.

Depend ing on the outside temperature, the mir­
ror surfaces are heated until the ignition is
switched off- even if the knob is no longer in po­
sition @.
You are well-advised to fold the exterior m irrors
in when maneuvering in tight spaces or when
leaving the car parked close to other veh icles.
Memory for exterior mirrors*
On vehicles with memory fo r the driver's seat, the
current setting for the exterior mirrors is auto­
matically stored along with the seat position
¢ page 65.
Tilt function for the passenger's mirror*
When the reverse gear is engaged, the mirror
surface tilts downward slightly if the setting is
for the passenger's mirror (knob in position®

Lights and Vision
The mirror returns to its initial position as soon
as reverse gear is disengaged and vehicle speed is
above about 9 mph (15 km/h). The mirror also returns to its initial position if the switch is
moved to the driver's exterior mirror© or the ig­
nition is switched off .
If the position of the mirror surface is changed
on a tilted mirror, this new position will be auto ­
matically assigned to the remote key when the
vehicle is taken out of reverse gear .
(D Note
- Curved mirror surfaces (convex or spheri­ cal*) increase your field of view. Remember
that vehicles or other objects will appear
smaller and farther away than when seen in
a flat mirror. If you use this mirror to esti­
mate distances of following vehicles when
changing lanes, you could estimate incor­ rectly and cause an accident.
- If the mirror housing is moved unintention­
ally (for example, while parking your vehi­
cle), then you must first fold the mirror
electrically. Do not readjust the mirror
housing manually. You could damage the
motor which controls the mirror.
- If you wash the vehicle in an automatic car
wash, you must fold the exterior mirrors in to reduce the risk of damage to the mirrors.
Never fold power folding exterior mirrors*
by hand . Only fold them in and out using
the power controls.
(D Tips
If there should be a malfunction in the elec­
trical system, you can still adjust the exterior
mirrors by pressing the edge of the mirror.

Manual anti-glare adjustment
.,. Move the small lever (located on the bottom
edge of the mirror) to the rear.
Automatically dimming mirrors* .,. To dim the rearview mirror and both exterior
mirrors*, press the @button. The diode @
turns on . The rearview and exterior mirrors*
dim automatically when light shines on them,
for example from headlights on a vehicle to the rear .
& WARNING
Electrolyte fluid can leak from automatic dim­
ming mirrors if the glass is broken. Electro­
lyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes and respirato­
ry system.
- Repeated or prolonged exposure to electro­
lyte can cause irritation to the respiratory
system, especially among people with asth­
ma or other respiratory conditions. Get
fresh air immediately by leaving the vehicle
or, if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
- If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them
thoroughly with large amounts of clean wa­
ter for at least 15 minutes; medical atten­
tion is recommended .
- If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected
area with clean water for at least 15 mi­
nutes and then wash affected area with
soap and water; medical attention is recom­
mended. Thoroughly wash affected clothing
and shoes before reuse.

Liquid electrolyte leaking from broken m irror
glass will damage any plastic surfaces it
comes in contact with. C lean up spilled elec­
trolyte immediately w ith clean water and a
sponge.
@ Tips
- Switch ing off the dimming function of the
i nside rear v iew mirror also deact ivates the
automat ic dimming function of the exte rior
mir rors*.
- The automatic d imm ing mirrors do not dim
when the interior lighting is turned on or
the reverse gea r is selected .
- Automat ic dimming for the m irror on ly op­
erates prope rly if the light str iking the in­
s ide mirror is not hinde red by othe r objects.
Digital compass
Activating or deactivating the compass
A ppl ies to vehicles: with digital compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear
view mirror.

down until the red d isplay appears or disap­

The digita l compass on ly works with the ignition
turned on. The directions are disp layed as initia ls :
N (North), NE (Northeast), E (East), SE (South­
east),
S (South), S W (Southwest), W (West), NW
(Northwest).
(!_) Tips
To avoid inaccurate d irect ions, do not allow
any remote controls, electrical systems, or
metal parts close to the mirror.
Setting the magnetic deflection zone

set in order to display the directions correctly.

Calibrating the compass
Applies to vehicles: with digital compass
The compass has to be recalibrated if the display
is wrong or inaccurate .
.,. Hold the@ button down until the letter C is
displayed on the interior rear view mirror.
.,. Drive in a circle at a speed of about 6 mph (10
km/h) until a d irection is shown on the interior
. . rear view mirror.
A WARNING
The digital compass is to be used as a direc­
tional aid only. Even though you may want to
look at it whi le you are driving, you must still
pay attention to traffic, road and weather
conditions as well as other possible hazards.

General information
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only
provide maximum protection if the front seats are corr ectly adjusted .
There are various ways of adjusting the front
seats to provide safe and comfortable support
for the driver and the front passenger . Adjust
your seat properly so that:
- you can easily and quickly reach all the switches
and controls in the instrument panel
- your body is properly supported thus reducing
physical stress and fatigue
- the safety belts and a irbag system can offer
maximum protection
<=:> page 151.
In the following sections, you will see exact ly
how you can best adjust your seats.
There are spec ial regulations and instr uctions for
installing a child safety seat on the front pas­
senger's seat . Always fo llow the information re ­
garding child safety provided in
¢ page 171,
Child safety.
A WARNING
Incorrect seating position of the driver and all
other passengers can result in serious person­
al injury .
- Always keep your feet on the floor when the
vehicle is in motion - never put your feet on
top of the instrument pane l, o ut of the win­
dow or on top of the seat cushion. This ap­
plies especially to the passengers.
If your
seating pos it ion is inco rrect, yo u increase
the risk of injury in the case of sudden brak­
ing or an accident. If the ai rbag inf lates and
the seating position is incorrect, this cou ld
result in personal injury or even death.
- It is important for both the driver and front
passenger to keep a d istance o f at least
10 inches (25 cm) between themselves and
the steering wheel and/or instrument pan­ el. If you're s itting any closer than this, the
airbag system can not protect you properly .
Seat s and sto rage
In addition, the front seats and head re­
stra ints must be adjusted to your body
he ight so that they can g ive you maximum
protection .
- Always try to keep as much distance as pos­
sible between yourself and the steer ing
wheel or instrument panel.
- Do not adjust the driver's or front passeng­
er's seat while the veh icle is moving . Your
seat may move unexpectedly, causing sud­
den loss of vehicle contro l and personal in­
jury.
If yo u ad just yo ur seat while the veh icle
is moving, you a re o ut of pos ition.
Driver's seat
The correct seat position is important for safe
and relaxed driving.
We recommend that you adjust the dr iver 's seat
i n the following manner:
.. Adjust the seat in fore and aft direction so that
you can eas ily push the pedals to the floor
while keeping yo ur knees slightly bent<=:>.&,

.,. Adjust the seatback so that when yo u sit with
your back agains t the se atback , you can still
grasp the to p of the steering wheel.
.,. Adjust the head res traint so the uppe r edge is

straint so that it is as close to this posit ion as
possible

A WARNING

Neve r place any objects in the dr iver's foot ­
well. An object could ge t into the pedal a rea
and inte rfe re with pedal function. In case of
su dd en braking or an accident, you would no t
be ab le to br ake or accelera te.

Front passenger 's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the
rearmost position.
To avoid contact with the airbag wh ile it is de­
ploying, do not sit any closer to the instrument
panel than necessary and always wear the three­
point safety belt prov ided adjusted correctly. We
recommend that yo u adj ust the passenger's seat
i n t he following ma nner:
.. Move the front passenger seat into the rear­
most position of the fore and aft adjustment
range

.. Bring the back rest up to a n (a lmost) upright
position .
Do not ride with the seat recl ined.
.. Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge is
as even as possible with the top of your head . If

.. Place your feet on the floor in front of the pas­
senger's seat .

- Never adjust the drive r's or front p asseng­
er 's sea t while t he veh icle is moving.
If you
do t his while the vehicle is moving, yo u will
be out of posit ion . Always ad just the driver 's
or front passenger's seat when the vehicle is
not moving .
- Be carefu l when adjusting the seat height.
Check to see that no one is in the way, or se­
rious injury could resu lt!
- Because the seats can be electrically adjust­
ed w ith the ignition off or with the ign ition
key removed, never leave children unattend­
ed in the vehicle. Unsupe rvised use of the
electric seat ad justmen ts may cause serious
in ju ry.
- To reduce the r isk of injury in the case of
sudden b raking or accident, front passen­
ge rs must neve r ride i n a moving ve hicle
w it h the backrest reclined. Safety belts a nd
the airbag system only o ffer maxim um pro­
t ection when the bac krest is upr igh t and the
safety belts are properly positioned on the
body. The mo re the bac krest is reclined, the
greater the risk of personal injury from an
incorrect seating position and improperly
positioned safety belts.

Memory function
Memory for driver's seat
Applies to vehicles: with seat memory
The seat adjustment settings for two drivers con
be stored using the memory buttons in the driv­
er's door .

In addition to the setting for the driver's seat ,
the exterior rear view mirror setting can be stor­
ed and recalled through seat memory if the vehi­
cle is proper ly equ ipped .
Storing and recall ing s ettings
With the help of the memory buttons 1 and 2
¢ fig . 65 the settings for two different drivers
can be stored and recalled
¢ page 65.
The cu rrent sett ings are also automatically as ­
signed to the remote contro l key being used
when the vehicle is locked . When the vehicle is
un locked, the settings ass igned to the remote
control key being used are automatica lly reca l­
led.
Turning seat memory on and off
If the IO FFI sw itch is depressed, the seat memory
is inoperat ive . When the Memory fu nction is off,
the LED in the button lights up .
All the sto red se ttings a re retained. We recom­
mend us ing the
IO FF I sw itch and deactivating the
seat memory if the ve hicle is on ly going to be
used
temporarily by a driver whose settings are
not go ing to be stored .

When the vehicle is locked , the current settings
are stored and assigned to the remote control
key . But the settings stored on memory buttons
1 to 2 are not de leted. They can be reca lled at
any time . When the vehicle is
unlocked , the set­
t ings assigned to the remote control key are re­
stored .
If your vehicle is driven by other persons using
your remote control key, you should save your in­
dividua l seat position o n one of the memory but­
tons . You can reca ll you r settings aga in simply
and conveniently by pressing the correspond ing
memo ry button. When the vehicle is loc ked,
t h ese settings are automatically re-ass igned to
t h e remo te contro l key and stored.

- For safety reasons, the seat sett ing can on ly
be recalled when the vehicle is stationa ry -
otherwise yo u risk having an accident .
- In an emergency the recall proced ure can be
cancelled by pressing the
! OF FI switch or by

To assign the drive r's seat settings to the remote
con trol key when locking the vehicle, the function
m ust be activated in the radio or M MI*.

Rear seat
General information
Safe transportation of passengers on the rear
seats requires proper safety precautions.
All passengers on the rear seats must be seated
in compliance w ith the safety guidelines ex ­
p lai ned in
¢ page 143 and ¢page 151. The cor­
rect seating positio n is critical for the safety of
fron t
and rear seat passengers a like ¢ page 13 7.

- O ccupan ts in the front and rear seats m ust
always be properly res trained.
- Do not let anyone ride in the vehicle withou t
t h e head restraints prov ided. Head re­
straints hel p to reduce injuries.
- Loose items ins ide the passenger compa rt­
ment, can fly forward in a crash or sudden
maneuver and injure occupants. Always
store articles in the luggage compartment
and use the fasten ing eyes, especially when
t h e rear seatbacks have been folded down.

The head restraints on the front seats can be ad­

at the optim um height. When optimally adjus t­
ed, the top of t he restraint sho uld be leve l with
the top of the head. If that is not possib le, try to
ad just the head restraint so that it is as close to
this position as possible

Installing the outer head restraints
• Slide the posts on the head restraint down into
the guides unti l yo u feel the posts click into
place.

able to pull the head restraint out of the back­
rest.
Removing the center head restraint
• Move the head restraint upward as far as it can
go .

So that the driver can have a better view to the
rear, the head restraints should be pushed down
completely when the rear seats are not occupied.
A WARNING
- Only remove the rear seat head restraints
when necessary in order to install a child
seat. Install the head restraint again imme­
diately once the child seat is removed. Driv­
ing without head restraints or with head re ­
straints that are not properly adjusted in­
creases the risk of ser ious or fatal neck in­
jury dramatically .

Center armrest
The armrest is adjustable in several stages and
can be moved forward and back.
