We recommend using a wheel lift and
dollies or flatbed equipment. Do not
tow with a slingbelt. Ford Motor
Company has not approved a
slingbelt towing procedure. If towed
incorrectly, or by any other means,
vehicle damage may occur.
Ford Motor Company produces a
towing manual for all authorized tow
truck operators. Have your tow truck
operator refer to this manual for
proper hook-up and towing
procedures for your vehicle.
It is acceptable to tow a front-wheel
drive (FWD) vehicle from the front if
using proper wheel lift equipment to
raise the front wheels off the ground.
The rear wheels can remain on the
ground when towed in this fashion.
FWD vehicles can also be towed from
the rear using wheel lift equipment;
however, the front wheels must be
placed on a dolly to prevent damage
to the transmission.
It is required to tow an all-wheel drive
(AWD) vehicle with a wheel lift and
dollies or flatbed equipment, with all
the wheels off the ground, to prevent
damage to the transmission, AWD
system or vehicle.
TOWING THE VEHICLE ON
FOUR WHEELS
Emergency Towing
You can flat-tow (all wheels on the
ground, regardless of the
powertrain/transmission
configuration) your disabled vehicle
(without access to wheel dollies,
car-hauling trailer, or flatbed transport
vehicle) under the following
conditions:
•
Your vehicle is facing forward so
you tow it in a forward direction.
• You place the transmission in
position N. If you cannot place the
transmission in position N, you
may need to override it. See
Transmission
(page 165).
• Maximum speed is 35 mph (56
km/h).
• Maximum distance is 50 miles (80
kilometers).
Recreational Towing
Note: Put your climate control system
in recirculated air mode to prevent
exhaust fumes from entering the
vehicle. See
Climate Control (page
126).
Follow these guidelines if you have a
need for recreational (RV) towing. An
example of recreational towing would
be towing your vehicle behind a
motorhome. These guidelines are to
make sure you do not damage the
transmission during towing.

If you need to arrange roadside
assistance for yourself, Ford Motor
Company will reimburse a reasonable
amount for towing to the nearest
dealership within 35 miles (56 km).
To obtain reimbursement information,
U.S. Lincoln vehicle customers call

asked to submit their original receipts.

HAZARD WARNING
FLASHERS
Note:
If used when the engine is not
running, the battery will lose charge.
There may be insufficient power to
restart your engine. The hazard warning button
is located on the instrument
panel. Use it when your
vehicle is creating a safety hazard for
other motorists.
• Press the button to turn on the
hazard warning function, and the
front and rear direction indicators
will flash.
• Press the button again to turn
them off.
FUEL CUT-OFF SWITCH WARNING
Failure to inspect and if
necessary repair fuel leaks after
a collision may increase the risk of fire
and serious injury. Ford Motor
Company recommends that the fuel
system be inspected by an authorized
dealer after any collision. In the event of a moderate to severe
collision, this vehicle is equipped with
a fuel pump shut-off feature that
stops the flow of fuel to the engine.
Not every impact will cause a shut-off.
Should your vehicle shut off after a
collision, you may restart your vehicle
by doing the following:

WASHER FLUID CHECK
WARNING
If you operate your vehicle in
temperatures below 40°F (5°C),
use washer fluid with antifreeze
protection. Failure to use washer fluid
with antifreeze protection in cold
weather could result in impaired
windshield vision and increase the risk
of injury or accident. Note:
The front and rear washer
systems are supplied from the same
reservoir.
Add fluid to fill the reservoir if the level
is low. Only use a washer fluid that
meets Ford specifications. See
Capacities and Specifications
(page 325).
State or local regulations on volatile
organic compounds may restrict the
use of methanol, a common
windshield washer antifreeze additive.
Washer fluids containing
non-methanol antifreeze agents
should be used only if they provide
cold weather protection without
damaging the vehicle ’s paint finish,
wiper blades or washer system. CHANGING THE 12V
BATTERY WARNINGS
Batteries normally produce
explosive gases which can cause
personal injury. Therefore, do not
allow flames, sparks or lighted
substances to come near the battery.
When working near the battery,
always shield your face and protect
your eyes. Always provide proper
ventilation. When lifting a plastic-cased
battery, excessive pressure on
the end walls could cause acid to flow
through the vent caps, resulting in
personal injury and/or damage to the
vehicle or battery. Lift the battery with
a battery carrier or with your hands on
opposite corners. Keep batteries out of reach of
children. Batteries contain
sulfuric acid. Avoid contact with skin,
eyes or clothing. Shield your eyes
when working near the battery to
protect against possible splashing of
acid solution. In case of acid contact
with skin or eyes, flush immediately
with water for a minimum of 15
minutes and get prompt medical
attention. If acid is swallowed, call a
physician immediately. Battery posts, terminals and
related accessories contain lead
and lead compounds. Wash hands
after handling. 277

CHECKING THE WIPER
BLADES
Run the tip of your fingers over the
edge of the blade to check for
roughness.
Clean the wiper blades with washer
fluid or water applied with a soft
sponge or cloth.
CHANGING THE WIPER
BLADES
The wiper arms can be manually
moved when the ignition is off. This
allows for ease of blade replacement
and cleaning under the blades.
1.
Pull the wiper blade and arm away
from the glass. 2.
Press the locking buttons together. 3. Rotate and remove the wiper
blade.
4. Install in the reverse order.
Note: Make sure that the wiper blade
locks into place. Lower the wiper arm
and blade back to the windshield. The
wiper arms will automatically return to
their normal position when the ignition
is turned on.
To change the rear blades, do the
following:
1. Lift the wiper arm. 2. Slightly rotate the wiper blade
from the wiper arm.
3. Disengage the wiper blade from the wiper arm.
4. Remove the wiper blade.
5. Install in the reverse order.
Note: Make sure that the wiper blade
locks into place.
Replace wiper blades at least once
per year for optimum performance.

Replacement bulbs are specified in
the chart below. Headlamp bulbs
must be marked with an authorized
“D.O.T.
” for North America to make
sure they have the proper lamp
performance, light brightness, light
pattern, and safe visibility. The correct

If you cannot remove those streaks
after cleaning with the glass cleaner
or if the wipers chatter and move in a
jerky motion, clean the outer surface
of the windshield and the wiper
blades using a sponge or soft cloth
with a neutral detergent or
mild-abrasive cleaning solution. After
cleaning, rinse the windshield and
wiper blades with clean water. The
windshield is clean if beads do not
form when you rinse the windshield
with water.
Note:
Do not use sharp objects, such
as a razor blade, to clean the inside of
the rear window or to remove decals,
as it may cause damage to the rear
window defroster ’s heated grid lines.
CLEANING THE INTERIOR WARNINGS
Do not use cleaning solvents,
bleach or dye on the vehicle
’s
safety belts, as these actions may
weaken the belt webbing. On vehicles equipped with
seat-mounted airbags, do not
use chemical solvents or strong
detergents. Such products could
contaminate the side airbag system
and affect performance of the side
airbag in a collision. For fabric, carpets, cloth seats, safety
belts and seats equipped with side
airbags:
•
Remove dust and loose dirt with a
vacuum cleaner.
• Remove light stains and soil with
Motorcraft® Professional Strength
Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner.
• If grease or tar is present on the
material, spot-clean the area first
with Motorcraft® Spot and Stain
Remover. In Canada, use
Motorcraftt Multi-Purpose Cleaner.
• If a ring forms on the fabric after
spot cleaning, clean the entire area
immediately (but do not
oversaturate) or the ring will set.
• Do not use household cleaning
products or glass cleaners, which
can stain and discolor the fabric
and affect the flame retardant
abilities of the seat materials.
