NOTE:
• Chec k the telescopi c mechanism , tilt mechanism , and steerin g joint bearing s or steerin g shaf t for movemen t and damage .
Replac e a s a n assembl y if damage d o r faulty .
• I f eithe r th e steerin g colum n assembl y o r TC S senso r i s removed , selec t th e appropriat e shi m an d adjus t th e distanc e
betwee n th e steerin g shaf t an d TC S sensor . Refe r t o Sectio n 1 9 fo r shi m selection .

Installatio n

vice .
1. Sli p th e lowe r en d o f th e steerin g join t ont o th e pin -
io n shaft .
2. Repositio n th e colum n assembl y o n th e hange r
bracket , an d loosel y tighte n wit h 8 m m flang e nuts . 4
. Instal l th e colum n holde r wit h th e 8 m m bolts .
3 . Tighte n t o th e steerin g join t bolts .
NOTE :
• B e sur e tha t th e lowe r bol t i s securel y i n th e
groov e in th e steerin g gearbo x pinio n shaft .
• B e sur e th e pinio n shaf t an d th e steerin g colum n
shaf t ar e aligned ; th e join t shoul d sli p o n freely .
I f no t repositio n th e steerin g rac k t o correc t th e
misalignment . 5
. Tighte n th e 8 m m flang e nut s t o th e specifie d
torque .
6 . Instal l th e steerin g join t cove r wit h th e clamp s an d
clips .

9. Install the column covers.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the column covers.

10. Insert the cable reel 3P connector through the col-

umn lower panel, and attach it to the column lower

panel with the connector holder. Then connect the

SRS main harness and cable reel 3P connector.

11. Install the column lower panel.
7. Install the combination switch assembly over the

column shaft.

NOTE: Befor e removin g th e steerin g gearbox , mak e
sur e th e fron t wheel s ar e straigh t ahead .
1 . Remov e th e steerin g join t cover .
2 . Remov e th e steerin g join t bolts , an d disconnec t th e
steerin g join t b y movin g th e join t towar d th e col -
umn .
3. Loc k th e steerin g shaf t wit h ignitio n ke y t o kee p th e
steerin g shaf t position .
4 . Rais e th e fron t o f th e vehicle , an d plac e safet y
stand s in th e prope r location s (se e sectio n 1 ).
5 . Remov e th e fron t wheels .
6 . Remov e th e cotte r pi n fro m th e castl e nut , an d remov e
the nut .
7. Instal l th e 1 0 m m he x nu t o n th e bal l joint . B e sur e
tha t th e 1 0 m m he x nu t i s flus h wit h th e bal l join t
pi n end , o r th e threade d sectio n o f th e bal l join t pi n
migh t b e damage d b y th e bal l join t remover .
NOTE : Remov e th e bal l join t usin g th e bal l join t
remover , 2 8 mm . Refe r t o pag e 18-2 1 fo r ho w to us e
th e bal l join t remover .

CAUTION : Avoi d damagin g th e bal l join t boot .
NOTE : I f necessary , appl y penetratin g typ e lubri -
can t t o loose n th e bal l joint .
9 . Remov e th e foldin g spar e tir e an d spar e tir e holde r
plate .
10 . Disconnec t th e batter y negativ e terminal , the n dis -
connec t th e positiv e termina l an d remov e th e bat -
tery .
11 . Remov e th e spar e tir e holde r an d floo r unde r cover .

15. Remove the terminal nuts and the wires from the

gearbox terminals.

12. Disconnect the connectors from the EPS wire har-

ness.
16. Remove the radiator pipe bracket at the front com-

partment bulkhead.

17. Remove the radiator pipe bracket at the floor, and

space the radiator pipe away from and gearbox.
13. Remove the ground cable by removing the EPS wire

harness bracket.

14. Remove the terminal guard and ground cable.ProCarManuals.com

NOTE: Before removing the gearbox, place a stand jack

under the gearbox and front crossbeam to lightly sup-

port them. Lower the gearbox together with the front

crossbeam.

18. Remove the flange bolts and nuts of the gearbox

and front crossbeam.
19. Lower the gearbox and front crossbeam with care

so as not to hit or damage the radiator pipe.

NOTE: The crossbeam is attached to the crossbeam

bracket with locating pins. Remove the crossbeam

by lightly taping on it with a plastic hammer, then

remove the gearbox.

20. When installing the crossbeam to the crossbeam

bracket, be sure to align the holes in the crossbeam

with the locating pins on the crossbeam bracket.ProCarManuals.com
